Promote Eugenics Globally

Hey Baron Joshua,

I have just recently read this page and I would like to state that I am very interested in this alternative history. I know very little about Tesla and I am glad you know so much. It is a joy to see such research into feasability and OTL.

I have a question regarding Eugenics. From my understanding and research, Eugenics was popularised during the 1800s, particularly in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but fell out of popularity during the 1930s. This was further escalated and magnified by Nazi Germany and WWII. There has been a modern resurgence in Eugenics, specifically in the form of 'test tube babies' where diseases and malnormalities are ratified during early development and desired traits can be influenced. Essentially, what form of Eugenics develops in this timeline?

I look forward to seeing this progress.

Greetings ArmsSpaghetti,

Your question is one I'm pleased to answer and shall do so foremost with this quote;

1935 9 February, Liberty Magazine Interview conducted by George Sylvester Viereck; "The year 2100 will see eugenics universally established. In past ages, the law governing the survival of the fittest roughly weeded out the less desirable strains. Then man’s new sense of pity began to interfere with the ruthless workings of nature. As a result, we continue to keep alive and to breed the unfit. The only method compatible with our notions of civilization and the race is to prevent the breeding of the unfit by sterilization and the deliberate guidance of the mating instinct. Several European countries and a number of states of the American Union sterilize the criminal and the insane. This is not sufficient. The trend of opinion among eugenists is that we must make marriage more difficult. Certainly no one who is not a desirable parent should be permitted to produce progeny. A century from now it will no more occur to a normal person to mate with a person eugenically unfit than to marry a habitual criminal."

In short the Eugenics being promoted or rather expanded in this timeline involves natural reproduction through selective breeding and marriage related legislation geared towards making it difficult for those persons who are deemed 'unfit' to either be parents or to have offspring from being wed. Additionally sterilization such as that practiced in the US and Canada during Tesla's time has continued.

How one may ask? - Well- I'll tell you what I am considering, and such seems the only way to make this happen- 'World War II in Europe ends in a Truce'- but how? I do not know but that's the only way to keep Eugenics active in Germany and as practiced prior to V-Day. For back in Tesla's day it was deemed 'crazy talk' to believe that eugenics would lead to genecide (according to wiki articles about Eugenics in the US that is). So having Nazi Germany survive WWII; and the Monarchist in Yugoslavia come out on top (they promoted Eugenics for the expansion of the Serbian race as well as the continued rule of Peter II) is what I'm considering.

However Tesla also has this quote;

"Woman will ignore precedent and startle civilization with their progressThe acquisition of new fields of endeavor by women, their gradual usurpation of leadership, will dull and finally dissipate feminine sensibilities, will choke the maternal instinct, so that marriage and motherhood may become abhorrent and human civilization draw closer and closer to the perfect civilization of the bee." 1926 30 January, Colliers interview by John B. Kennedy

Where in Test Tube babies and other artificial forms of reproduction will eventually become the norm with Woman designing individuals to serve social functions with in the state. It's something else I find unnerving but such is one of his predictions and thus something this timeline must move towards. In short, legislation is focused largley on natural repoduction but science in regards to artificial and 'managed' reproduction; such as Test Tube babies who are altered in the womb will continue to take place.

I'd love to have another contributing to this timeline if your still interested :)

With a legislational focus on the progression of eugenics in both natural and artificial regards combined with an emphasis and increased difficulty in marriage, how will homosexual and non-heterosexual relationships and people be regarded in this alternative history? I assume because a homosexual person cannot reproduce naturally within a monogamous relationship then the implications are that the person is not fit to bear children? Furthermore, are these traits considered undesirable in the world? Do non-heterosexuals face the same backlashes in the 20th century as in our timeline if not magnified?

I am enthusiastic to hear your response,

Due to the high focus on reproduction and the purpose of marriage to create offspring homosexuals in the timeline are unlikely to, infact- probably wont- recieve legal permission to marry. At the least extreme they'd have relationships and love but not be able to legally marry. At the most extreme pre-natal screenings might be used to prevent them from even being born as estrogene levels in such infants tend to be high for males. I'm sure it'll differ from nation to nation but over all due to the focus on marriage as a means to reproduce they are likely to be shunned. One could even go so far as to say that the pyschological opinion of the issue from the mid 20th century still stands and that perhaps even an even less extreme example such persons do take part in heterosexual relationships while having a same sex partner on the side. A kind of 'duty' thing where they marry a member of the opposite sex (a cover one could say) and have children with said person either throguh direct biological means under stimulus or though artificial insemination while continuing to take part in a homosexual subculture away from public life. Sodomists in Canada during the time of Tesla are a good example- while not exclusively homosexual the group included them and the bulk of it's male members still had female spouses and a children. Baron Joshua (talk) 09:50, March 14, 2018 (UTC)
