Tasmania, officially known as the Crown Colony of Tasmania, is one of the many territories of the British Empire. It was founded in 1829 as Van Diemens Land.
History[]
Referendum talks[]
In June of 1864, James Whyte had a proposal to be in five years time a separate nation which still would have ties to the British Empire in terms of trade but three months later the British Government responded with a letter saying that it would be in Tasmania's best interests to stay in the Empire as a state of the newly formed Realm of Australia, as Tasmania did not have a large enough economy to support itself.
