Known around most of the world as the "Inca Empire", the nation is propertly called Tawantinsuyu, with "Inca" being the imperial title. Arising somewhere in the Andean highlands early in the 13th century, the mountain fastness of the Empire lent itself to security and cooperation, rather than conflict, with the Spanish settlers who arrived in the 16th century. Today, Tawantinsuyu is one of the strongest economies in the eastern Pacific region, and a major military power.
