Geographically, the Territory of Swan is bounded to the west by the Indian Ocean, and is centred around the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary. The territory possesses many kilometres of ocean coastline, most of which is sandy beaches. There are also artificial canal systems, on which other suburbs have developed.
The economic activity of the Territory of Swan is heavily concentrated around Canberra. A stable housing market, steady employment and rapid population growth in the 21st century have led to economic prosperity and in 2011 IBS ranked the Territory as the second best performing economic region in the country. This trend continued into 2016, when the territory was ranked the third best performing out of all of Cygnia's states and territories. There is a higher proportion of young adults in the region compared with other Cygnian states or territories. Approximately one-fifth of TS residents were born outside Cygnia, mainly in the British Isles. Almost one-fifth speak a language other than English at home, the most common being Chinese.
