Texas, officially the Republic of Texas, is a state of the Confederate States of America. It is the largest state of the Confederacy by both area and population. It borders Louisiana and the French colony of the same name to its east, Arkansas to its northeast, Oklahoma to its north, Mexico to its west, and the Gulf of Mexico to its south. Its diverse and vast landscape contains praires, deserts, swamps and piney woods.
Texas was founded as an independent republic in 1835: after a brief time as a state of the United States, it became one of the seven original states of the Confederacy. Its capital, Houston, is the most popolous city of the country. An industrial powerhouse, Texas bases its economy around cattle, bison, oil, cotton and timber. The vast oil reserves of the state were one of the driving forces behind the Confederacy's recent industrial boom. The fundamental role that Texas plays in the economy of the Confederacy is represented by the fact that it is the only state that styles itself as a "Republic", and also has greater autonomy than other states of the country.
