The Republic of Texas, or simply Texas (Iberian: República de Texas), is a sovereign state in North America. It was colonized by the Iberians as a province of the Viceroyalty of New Iberia, being known as the "Provincia de Texas". Several religious missions were made by Castilian Catholics, effectively giving Iberia a foothold in the frontier land. Several presidios were also established to maintain buffers between the lands of New Iberia and the lands of Louisiana claimed by the French. The first civilian settlement in Texas, San Arturo, was established as a way station between missions and the next-nearest existing settlement. The Lipan Apache tribe occasionally raided the town. In 1810, Mexico vied for independence from Iberia, which brought heavy turmoil onto Texas. In due time, Texas was governed as part of the newly formed First Mexican Empire after the overthrow of the Iberian colonial government of Joan Sabaté. Tensions escalated between Anglo-Texans, Chicanos and Mexicans due to disenfranchisement with the Mexican regime, especially on the status of slavery and the centralist tendencies of many Mexican officials. In 1832, after a bloody revolution, Texas was granted its independence from Mexico, though its territory frequently shifted as Mexico tried to contend with it for dominance. In the Rio Grande Agreement of 1841, Texas would receive territory north of the Rio Grande river, while Mexico would retain its territory to the south. However, this did little to fix territorial demands on both sides. This lead to frequent clashes in the mid-late 1800s and early 1900s. At this same time, Texas became notorious as a haven for people fleeing other parts of the continent for reasons such as debt, war tensions, and crime, which contributed to the image of the West concurrent with the French West. In the 20th century, after a brief period of economic stagnation, the Texan economy rebounded with prominent agrarian cattle and bison industries, as well as cotton, timber, and oil refineries. It is a major power in North America, some saying it has a sphere of hegemony around the Southern North American countries.
