The Republic of Texas (Spanish: República de Texas), colloquially known as Texas, is a sovereign state located in North America. The nation is bordered by Alaska in the north; the United States in the east; and Mexico in the southwest.
History[]
The region began as an intendancy of the Viceroyalty of New Spain and later the Mexican Empire. Settlers from the United States began to migrate to the territory in the 1820s, eventually making up the majority. The animosity between Mexico City and the American "Anglos" (among them being the reintroduction of slavery into the region) would culminate into a revolution in 1835 and de facto independence a year later. Despite attempts to be annexed into the United States by the new republic, fears of a continental war would prevent this from happening.
With the election Henry Clay in 1844, the possibility of Texas' annexation by the United States ended. The Clay administration would work to settle the "Texas Question," resulting in a compromise between the Mexican Empire, the Russian Empire, Texas, and the United States. Under these agreements, Mexico City would officially recognize Texas' independence. Texas would compensate Mexico for the loss of the territories north of the Rio Grande (which would be partially paid by American and French loans). The republic would be formally barred from ever joining the United States (thereby creating a buffer state between Mexico and the US). Texas would also amend their constitution to guarantee citizenship for the texanos and to formally abolish slavery.
Administrative Divisions[]
The Republic of Texas is a unitary state comprised of hundreds of counties (Spanish: condados).
