Thailand (Thai: ประเทศไทย Prathet Thai), officially the Kingdom of Thailand (Thai: ราชอาณาจักรไทย Ratcha-anachak Thai), is a sovereign nation in Southeast Asia: it borders the Indochinese Union to its east, Burma to its north and west, the Indian Ocean to its west, and Malaya and the South China Sea to its south. It emerged as a unified kingdom during the Middle Ages, and developed a unique culture, influenced by Buddhism: it is one of the few nations of its region that never fell under European domination.

This is for mainly two reasons: the first was a series of able rulers able to exploit the competition between the two dominant powers in the region (France and Great Britain), and the second was that Thailand acted as a buffer state between the two empires. During the Great War, Thailand was occupied by Japan, and forced to relinquish some of its territories in favor of Malaya and later the Indochinese Union; the Japanese also placed a faction favorable to them to govern the country, thus leading to Thailand joining the Greater East Asia Co-Prospherity Sphere.

Thailand is a mostly mountainous country, degrading into hills and coastal plains towards the south. Much of the country is covered in jungles and forests, while the only heavily urbanized area is in the southern part of the country, around the national capital, Bangkok. Thailand's culture was influenced by numerous other cultures, and its most important aspect is probably adherence to Theravada Buddhism. The country's economy is predominantly agricultural, with industrialization being prevalent near major urban centres to the south; tourism is also an important part of Thailandese economy, thanks to the country's numerous natural and historical attractions.
