After a long time, The Ashes of Rome Map Game finally has a sequel, come into the power vacuum and forge your civilization!
The year is 500 C.E., and the mighty Roman Empire has finally crumbled. Lying in its wake is its legacy state, the Byzantine Empire, occupying The Balkan Peninsula, Anatolia and Northeast Africa. It remains the most powerful European state, though its barbarian neighbours continue to threaten its prosperity. To the East is the mighty Sassanian Empire, centred in Persia, although its forces seem to be steadily encroaching on south-eastern Europe.
In the former Western Roman Empire, several Gothic Kingdoms have formed and continue to grow in size and power. The Visigoths are situated mostly in Hispania, the Ostrogoths in Italy, the Franks and the Burgundians in Gaul, the Gepids in Dacia, and the Vandals in Northern Africa. Additionally, the Celtic people, long divided and hostile, have formed the Britannian States, modeled after the long-dead Roman Republic.
In addition to the centralized Kingdoms, tribal groups of Germanic peoples are beginning to gain strength, though they are not quite yet unified. These groups include the Suebi, the Anglo-Saxons, the Jutes, the Danes, the Alemanni, the Lombards, and the Saxons. To the Northeast lie the Baltic and Slavic nomads, far from unification, and still living in territory untouched by any true nation-states. In this tumultuous time, change is inevitable, but yet to be known is who will be lost to the sands of time, and who will emerge triumphant and mighty.

500 AD[]
The game has begun.
Unrest occurs in the Byzantine provinces of Egypt and Africa. Many citizens of these provinces are calling for separation from the empire.
The Ostrogoths and Vandals continue to fight for control of Sicily.
The Suebi Tribes begin to raid trade routes in the Western Visigothic Kingdom.
- Britannia: The formation of the Britannian States, also known as the Celtic League, successfully results in the banding of Britons of all creeds together against both Picts to the North and Saxons to the South. Following the Battle of Badon, the various Celtic tribes of Britain were united under the victorious British leader, Ambrosius Aurelianus. A gathering of all the British leaders and chieftains took place in Londinium. It was agreed that Ambrose Aurelianus would be crowned the (High) King of Britain. However, a government would be set up to rule Britain, modeled on the ancient Roman Republic. There would be a Senate, and also a Legislative Assembly. The Sub-Roman Britains knew only vaguely of the far-away governmental system that had governed them from Rome for centuries, but under the direction of a number of powerful men, the British went about attempting to replicate the ideal Roman-style government. The Chieftains were given a special place in the Cubiculum Superior (Upper Chamber), while all Celts and Britons were given the right to vote for those who would be elected to the Cubiculum Inferior (Lower Chamber) - as long as they were male, worked, and paid taxes to this government. Ambrosius Aurelianus immediately began to train up an army "in the Roman fashion", but the disorganization of the British forces (as well as the substantial lack of them) makes this difficult. Forces are sent to reoccupy and refortify the abandoned and decaying Hadrian's Wall to the North, while construction begins on a wall along the South, to keep the Anglo-Saxons out.
- Frankish Kingdom: With the situation in Burgundy deteriorating fast, King Clovis decides to send 2000 men down into the Kingdom to secure the tribute state before any moves could be made by the Visigoths. We also start to dig out new roads across the country to help keep communications among the realm as reliable as possible. The King's advisors draft a system of nation wide tax, the first time such a system would be introduced by a Germanic state, and implement it by 502 AD. Paganism by this point was a minority religion and soon pressure begins to mount to have King Clovis convert from Paganism to Christianity.
- Visigothic Kingdom: We offered armistice to the Frankish Kingdom and hoped for an alliance or to an extent, a new union.
- Frankish Kingdom (Diplomacy): We will only accept peace if the Visigoths hand over Aquitaine and agree to never involve themselves in Burgundy again.
- Byzantine Empire: The Empire decided to give Egypt autonomy. Byzantine got wealth as is controlled the trade route between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Byzantine landed in Lazica with 20,000 soldiers and started invasion. (algo needed)
- Sasanid Empire: The invasion of Georgia is met with much surprise by Shahanshah Jamasp and his advisors. In response to the invasion of Sasanid territory, they respond in a manner befitting the situation and amass an army comprised of 100k men. The army is split into 3 field armies with (going to use convention map naming for ease of use) Army Group A: 45k, Army Group B: 30k, Army Group C: 25k. Army Group A (45k) is placed under the command of the Shahanshah himself who has experience with the terrain of the region being invaded due to a prior campaign to respond directly to the actions of the Byzantine military (Algo Needed). Army Group B (30k) is tasked with seizing Aleppo and Antioch (Algo Needed). Lastly, Army Group C (25k) is directed to acquire the city of Damascus followed by Jerusalem (Algo Needed). An appeal is made to the Jewish and Samaritans of Palaestina Prima requesting they join the Sasanids on the promise of independence and autonomy (Mod Response). The Lakhmids and Iberian regions are mobilized to support the Sasanid war effort as well.
- Mod Responce and Algorithm Scores: 165 Points attacker vs 85 Points defence. The Sasanid Army Group A of 45,000 men are able to destroy the 2000 Byzantines at Nesos. Aleppo falls to Army Group B as the garrison was unaware of the attack and outnumbered, but the Antioch would repel the attack knowing that it was coming, but the cities garrison would be nearly wiped out in the defence, Army Group B suffers heavy casualties as well, fighting at Damascus would continue on to the end of the year with fighting reaching the middle of the city. The Jewish population was too low in Palestine to come to a conclusive decision on the Sasanid request. The Samaritan population was larger and was openly against the Byzantines after 40 years of persecution and having their revolts crushed. Some decide to go to Damascus to help the Sasanids while others engage in civil disobedience in Palestine.
- Visogothic Empire: We are now agree that we ceded Eastern Aquitaine, and stop involve in Burgundy. We hoped for an alliance with the Frankish Kingdom.
- Kingdom of Linyi: As Linyi is situated in a position which is considered to be somewhat important in the spice trade, just underneath the Northern dynasty and the west which is supposed to be the rest of the world, it is high time for Linyi to improve its naval power in response for the commerce of the country to protect the maritime trade, the main source for the country's economy. As the Qi is facing its internal problems from Xiao Yan's rebellion, this could be seen as an opportunity for Linyi to invade Jiaozhou, but remembering the sack of Kandapurpura by the Liu Song in 446, King Jaya Jayavarman IV is hesitant to strike, but for now he can be relieved as the Northern dynasty won't attack Linyi any time soon. He then orders to build more ships for the navy. In the south, the Kingdom of Funan is thriving, and King Jaya Jayavarman IV wishes to improve relations with them for now by sending envoys to Funan. (Mod Response). Meanwhile, explorers are sent to explore the lands in the south of Funan (note: small city-states in the Malay Peninsula) to find out their locations (Mod Response for success) for an eventual raids into their territories to gain wealth in the future.
- (Mod Response) The Envoy arrives within a month of departure after a long trek but Funan is weary of anything more then just better relations due to the fear of Chinese interference in their affairs, but no less, you get better relations. The exploration fails as your explorers lack experience in the sea and instead land in the lands of the Khmer people just west of the Funan border.
- Visogothic Kingdom: We decide to invade our western, hostile neighbour, Kingdom of Suebi. We sent 12,500 troops, in which divided into 2 group: east and west. Eastern group will have about 5,500 troops, Western group will have about 7,000 troops.
- (Mod Responce) You are only able to make minimal progress into Suebi lands as they have been able to attack your borderlands and damage your infrastructure and their armies of 18,000 men have started to build up.
- Visogothic Kingdom: We decided to encircle the Suebi lands and reinforce by more than 10,000 troops.
505 AD[]
The Byzantine-Sasanian War continues to grow in scale. The Battle for Damascus lasted for over a year with a final Sasanian victory with the help of the Samaritans. The Byzantines still possess most of the coast of the Levant while most of Syria and some of the Levant is under Sasanian control.
With little activity from the Vandals the island of Sicily falls firmly into the hands of the Ostrogoths, ending the 15 years of fighting over the island.
The White Huns in the thousands surge into the eastern provinces of the Sasanian Empire, this may jeopardise the Sasanian War effort against the Byzantines.
The Frankish Kingdom are able to secure their tributary state of Burgundy and gain Aquitaine from a Visigoth concession, easing tensions between the two states.
Xiao Yan, having successfully rebelled against Xiao Baojuan and the Qi, dethroned and killed Emperor He, thus overthrowing the Qi and establishing the Liang dynasty.
- Frankish Kingdom: King Clovis finally decides to convert to Christianity, the first Frankish King to do so. A Cathedral is commissioned to be built in Paris, its name after much thought would be declared King Clovis Cathedral. The biggest civil law code is officially put into use in 508, Salic Law provided written codification of both civil law, such as the statutes governing inheritance, and criminal law, such as the punishment for murder. Although it was originally intended as the law of the Salians or Western Franks.
- Roman Empire: The Roman Empire made the Kingdom of Lazica its vassal states. It also sent diplomats to Kingdom of Iberia (one in Caucasus) and Kingdom of Albania (One in Caucasus) to be its vassal states. (MOD response needed) Byzantine sends diplomats to Kingdom of Axum to accept the alliance request and asks it to attack Himyar. (mod response needed).
The Empire also sends diplomats to make an alliance with the white huns. (mod response needed). To defend from powerful Persian Empire, Roman Empire takes soldiers from all over the Empire and its vassal states, and sends 50,000 troops to Damascus, and sends 60,000 to Aleppo. Cavalries were also sent. (Algo needed)
- Ousanas II of Aksum accepts the Alliance offer generously but respectfully declines the request of the invitation due to him not having much interests in that kingdom -Fluttee
- With the two Kingdoms being a Persian vassal at this period of time they two decline the offer -Mod
- In the Post roman world connections between a large distance requires an envoy to cross the whole Persian realm making it implausible -verified by 3 mods
- Britannian States: The new League has proved quite successful. Although there are several internal conflicts, the odd uprising here and there, on the whole everyone seems pretty satisfied with the new state of affairs and political system. Britain begins to see itself as a continuation of the old, distant Rome. Indeed, while Rome itself has fallen to Barbarians, Roman culture continues in Britain, undisturbed, much as before. The huge new wall, known as Ambrose's Wall, being built over the southern coast to keep out Saxons and the like has almost been completed, and Hadrian's Wall has been refortified, with some men discussing moving further north to the Antonine Wall. Efforts to build up the army in the style of the old Roman imperial forces is partially successful, and there is also an attempt to construct further roads to link all of the island together.
- Gupta empire:new year comes to the Gupta empire with much concern for the Emperor whilst the Huns in the northwest sapping our lands and conquering and razing much of our cities, this Angers the emperor who orders the mobilization of his forces. His royal army is raised with it accounted of an estimated 50,000 men with 200 war elephants, records inform that the army Will be mostly horse archers and heavy swords cavalry with both of them numbering 15,000 heavy swordsmen and 15,000 horseback archers. It is supported by 20,000 light infantry men and 5,000 archers. The army formation is similar to the Murian empire warfare. Armies from the vassals and tributary states and other feudalities in the empire core is recalled. This amounts the numbers all together to 120,000 troops and 1,200 war elephants added to the royal 50,000 amounting around 170,000 troops and 1,400 war elephants. This great army will March into the occupied lands of northwest India. With the Guptan army gathering much of its Siege weapons and Siege ladders ready to attack the cities. Bridges and passages will be seized with the great army marching to defeat the Huns. Several battle breaks out with most of it won by the Guptans. The victory of the Gupta empire's army was due to many factors that include cutting supplies and modest terrains for warfare and anti-cavalry tactics that was extensively used against the entire cavalry forces that the Huns used. One of them include charing elephants toward the charging cavalry using the oversized privilege as a perk against the Huns. That results into a major massacre of the Hunic cavalry forced as they are stomped to death so does the horses that meet the same fate with the survivor's beeing eat her javelined by a Guptan Elephant mounted spear thrower or a Guptan elephant mounted horse archer. This result the loss of vast lands occupied by the Huns and reclaiming cities that were long seized by the Huns. But with all that done the Guptan infantry suffered horrible casualties by the flanking Hunic cavalry while the infantry had been reported that they have lost once 19,300 men in a single battle with in the first 2 hours. But they must be sacrificed. The Hunic power where sapped to the point that the extensivity of Raids are reduced to barely even to the conquered territories. Kanpur, Ranchi, Agra, Kota were all seized back with the domain of the Empire extends back. With victory declared at last!
510 AD[]
Stalemate ensues as the Byzantines retake some of their lost territory from the Sassanians.
The White Huns continue to ravage the east of the Sassanian Empire. The Byzantines secure relations with them and Sasanian Empire is forced into a two front war.
The Death of the King of the Picts causes the Picts to start infighting, not civil war, but general instability has risen.
- Roman Empire: The Great Emperor of Roma sends diplomats to king of Persia, asking it to return Damascus or it will face consequence.
- Kingdom of Linyi (Champa): The late King, Jaya Jayavarman IV has passed away and his son succeeded him to become the next king, taking the name of Jaya Devavarman. King Jaya Devavarman would fund the next exploration out to the open sea to find nations in the Malay peninsula (Pan Pan, Chi Tu) again, after the failed exploration 10 years earlier, as this is seen as an embarrassment to our ancestors' legacies, having derived from sea people. (Mod Response for success) Meanwhile, as the nation is peaceful, King Jaya Devavarman makes a new policy named Jabuel padaok labik pala-paléw (settle soldiers to agriculture), which means soldiers are sent back to cultivate and will be re-drafted when there's need for war. Meanwhile, irrigation systems are being improved. Handicrafts are continued to be sold to merchants arriving to our ports as commerce continues to be our number one source of economy.
- Mod Response: Your sailors come across the Pan Pan Kingdom, a small mysterious nation on the Melay peninsula, the locals are not openly hostile and give you some cultural gifts of some value.
- Britannian States: Ambrose's Wall along the Cliffs of Dover and the rest of the South Coast is built up even more. However, this means the British of the Isles are finding it increasingly difficult to access the Britons in Brittany in Gaul, also part of the Celtic League. Seeking to fully Romanize the military, the Britons' army is trained in formations and tactics remembered as Roman, and has grown substantially. However, being an island nation, the British so far have little to use their army for, except perhaps for defence. However, when the death of the Pictish King Drest occurs, the Britons take advantage of the infighting, with their forces pushing the border further north, eventually leaving Hadrian's Wall behind and reaching the old Antonine Wall, over 300 years old, which they immediately begin to refortify and build up. The British take further advantage of the infighting, and, hoping to encourage civil war, begin to send rile up the Picts against each other.
- Visogothic Kingdom: We want to make an alliance with Frankish Kingdom, since it had made economic aid to the nation. (MOD RESPONSE)
- Frankish Kingdom (Diplomacy): We reluctantly accept the pleas of the Visigoths and sign alliance accords with them.
- Visogothic Kingdom: Well, as a thank to the Franks, we decided to open borders for tourism/visiting from the Franks, and decided to open trade with it.
- Frankish Kingdom: Frankish Kingdom faced social upheaval after the death of King Clovis in 511. After years of mourning, the fairly new king, Childebert I would take charge and order the reform of the government from just advisors to the king into a Council of Dukes and Counts. The Army is moved into position at the Burgundian border in preparation to annex the tribute state.
515 AD[]
The Sasanian Empire and Byzantine Empire face another burst of tensions in their continuing conflict as the Sasanians ignore Byzantine threats.
The Picts collapse into anarchy, many influential leaders of the Picts warn that the Britannians may take advantage of the situation, these plees fall on death ears.
The Burgundian King, Sigismund, has a manic episode and kills his son, the weakening of the Burgundian state continues.
Emperor Xuanwu of Northern Wei dies and is succeeded by his son, Yuan Xu. As he is only 5 years old, his mother becomes the regent and empress dowager.
- Roman Empire: The Emperor of Rome is furious that his diplomats are literally ignored.
- Britannian States: As has been expected by some, the Britannians take advantage of the anarchy among the Picts. The Britannians decide to start a gradual invasion of the country, slowly pushing the border further north, using their Romanized army. The Picts, meanwhile, are too busy fighting each other to do much about it. Britannian leaders approach one of the Pictish factions, with a deal: Britannia promises to help them take control of the country, send them military aid, if they agree to join the Celtic League and the Britannian States. The benefits are outlined extensively. (Pictish or Mod Response). Meanwhile, Britannia also seeks to establish an informal alliance with the Gaelic Kingdom of Dál Riata, who have been gradually colonizing the western corner of Pictland from Hibernia. (Mod Response).
- Mod Responce: Dal Riata agrees to the alliance but continues to be weary of the growing Britannian influence in the isles. With the prewarning in mind, the Pictish faction decline the Britannian offer.
- Britannian States: We nevertheless attempt to build up close ties to a certain Pictish faction, hoping they might eventually agree to our proposal, which it is emphasized would be beneficial for all. The Britannian King meets and befriends the Pictish chieftains. A little less than 5 years later, the proposal is made again, this time after some time of friendliness and trust being built up (Mod Response).
- Visogothic Kingdom: We decided to form cities which is near the Mediterranean Sea.
