John, Paul, George, and Ringo

The Beatles during the early 1960's

The Beatles are an Irish formed in Dublin in 1960. The band originally comprised of four English refugees, James Paul McCartney, John Winston Lennon, George Harrison, and Randolph Peter Scanland (Lennon, Scanland and Harrison were all of partial Irish descent). Scanland left the band in 1962, and was replaced by Richard Starkey, better known by his stage name Ringo Starr.

The Beatles are often regarded as one of the most influential bands in modern history. The band was integral to the evolution of pop music into a recognizable art form and to the development of the 1960's counter-culture. They often incorporated elements of classical music, older pop, and unconventional recording techniques in innovative ways, and they experimented with a number of musical styles in the later sixties, including pop ballads, Indian music, psychedelia and hard rock. As they continued to draw influences from a variety of cultural sources, their musical and lyrical sophistication grew, and they came to be seen as embodying the era's socio-cultural movements.
