Welcome to The Flames of Time (TFoT), a community timeline by ThatDudeRightHere that is essentially a mix of alternate history and conworlds, in a similar vein to timelines such as What a Wonderful World and An Honorable Retelling. It is essentially a reboot of the older It Was Always Burning (IWAB), with much of the PoDs that it was planned to have being effectively in this TL.

Rules[]

Due to TFoT being a community timeline, there has to be rules to it. So, if you want to join, then please read this:

  1. Follow the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated. In other words, be respectful to fellow contributors to the timeline.
  2. Before making edits to the TL or creating pages for it, you got to join the timeline, either through the Discord server or through my talk page (already mentioned in contributors).
  3. Keep this timeline free of any alien space bat (ASB) elements, such as magic and ISOTs. The only exception to this rule is minor geographical ASBs.
  4. No one in the TL's administration has power over the other, and no admin of the TL can abuse their power.
  5. Plaigiarism is not allowed, period. Also, try not to copy too many ideas from other timelines.
  6. Usage of AI-generated images is permitted, and using AI as an aid to help you write pages is also allowed, but if you use AI to write entire pages, then please rewrite it.

With all that being said, I hope you have fun, and please enjoy the TL!

About cliches[]

Despite most community timelines banning them, I will not ban cliches. However, you got to make the lore well-written and interesting. For example, if you want to add things such as the CSA to the timeline? Then go ahead, nothing is preventing you. But, please, make it well-written.

Banned people[]

These are people that do not have access to The Flames of Time, due to their actions on this or other timelines. The reasons will be stated beside their names.

Points of divergence[]

Prehistory and Antiquity[]

  • 146 BC: Ancient Carthage is vassalized, not annexed by the Roman Republic, allowing for Punic culture to survive to the present day.
  • 30 BC: Cleopatra VII thinks more rationally and does not commit suicide, instead negotiating with Octavian to allow Ptolemaic Egypt to continue surviving, albeit as a vassal state of the Roman Empire.

Middle Ages[]

  • 6th century: Arianism makes it way to Scotland, England and Scandinavia, due to Arian missionaries moving northward and preaching the doctrine throughout the region. It is eventually stamped out by the Chalcedonian doctrine in the British Isles and Scandinavia, but survives in Iceland, Vinland, Greenland, the Isle of Man, and rural parts of Finland.
  • 534: The Vandal Kingdom is vassalized by the Eastern Rome instead of fully annexed.
  • 590: Someone loyal to Bahram Chobin assassinates Khosrow II while he is on his way to see Maurice, resulting in Bahram, who does not want to continue the conflict with the Eastern Roman Empire, to consolidate his power in Persia.
  • 7th century: The Bulgars split and have different migrations than OTL; some end up in the Balkans like in OTL, while some migrate to modern-day Italy, where they become the Vaulgarians.
  • 608-610: Since the Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628 is averted, Heraclius does not rise to power. This allows for Phocas and his successors to push back the Bulgar and Slav raids for now. This also allows for the survival of the Thraco-Romans, rather than their assimilation.
  • 8th century: Andalusia adopts Shia Islam as its main religion.
  • 747-749: The Bashmurian Copts take advantage of the Abbasid Revolution (which is much different than OTL due to Baghdad being founded approximately to OTL's Najaf, thus it occurs there instead of Central Asia) in the Umayyad Caliphate, turning the Bashmurian revolts into an Egyptian War of Independence, allowing Egypt to remain Coptic-majority to the present.
  • 855: Middle Francia does not collapse, instead it only loses control of Italy. This paves the way for a much stronger Burgundy.
  • c. 995-1005: The Vikings, led by Leif Erikson, establish permanent settlements on OTL's Newfoundland, all of which later become Vinland. This goes unknown to Europe, sans the Anglo-Saxon nobility.
  • 1008: Due to Islam having a Greco-Roman identity, much of the internal problems of the Caliphate of Córdoba do not exist, as most of the Arab settlers assimilate into the Berber, Muladí and Mozarab population. As such, after the Umayyads are removed, a Muladí dynasty is installed.
  • 1025: Srivijaya repels the Chola raids on its territory, as they were made aware of the ambitions of the Cholas a lot earlier, resulting in them being more prepared for the attacks. This results in OTL's Indonesia and Malaysia to remain Hindu, while also allowing for the Cholas to maintain a trade relationship with Srivijaya.
  • 1059: Isaac I Komnenos is defeated by the Pechenegs, forcing him to retreat to Constantinople rather than vacationing in Thrace. This averts his illness and overthrow, and butterflies the Battle of Manzikert.
  • 1066: After discreetly hearing about and engaging in trans-Atlantic contact, much of the Anglo-Saxon nobility flee to OTL's Prince Edward Island, where a rump Anglo-Saxon kingdom exists to this day.
  • 1096-1099: The First Crusade leads to a Roman reconquest of Syria, as well as the establishment of a surviving Kingdom of Jerusalem.
  • 1195: Alexios Angelos dies while in imprisonment, preventing the Fourth Crusade from happening on the Eastern Roman Empire.
  • 13th century: The Mongol Empire steamrolls through a vastly different Central Asia. Without Islam reaching the region, Zoroastrianism and Nestorianism are adopted by the Mongol elite.
  • 1207: Philip Simonsson kills Inge II instead of giving up Sverresborg Castle. He also establishes trade relations with the Icelandic Commonwealth, preventing the Old Covenant from being signed and allowing for the commonwealth's survival.
  • 1209-1229: The Albigensian Crusade fails due to lack of support from the Council of Bourges. Not only does this result in Louis VIII's indirect survival, it also leads to the survival of Catharism as an important minority religion in nations such as France and Italy.
  • 1249: Andalusia retains control of the Algarves, however, the Reconquista ends in a stalemate, resulting in a religiously-divided Iberia to this day.
  • 1282: The Mongols launch a successful invasion of Japan, causing them to ally with the emperor to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate and end military rule, and converting most of the country to Nestorianism. This also paves they way for Japan to become a thalassocratic trading empire centered around Polynesia.
  • 1363: The County of Tyrol isn't sold to the Habsburgs, instead it remains a part of Bavaria.
  • 1396: As there is no Ottoman Empire, the Second Bulgarian Empire survives.
  • 15th century:
    • The State of the Teutonic Order does not assimilate the Old Prussians, resulting in a survival of their culture to the present day.
    • Voyages by Arab, Srivijayan and Chinese traders lead to the Discovery of Australia, leading to a scramble for the continent.
  • 1421: Chinese explorer Zheng He lands on what would be the Galapagos archipelago.

  • 16th century:

  • 1532:
    • The Estates of Brittany reject absorption into France, allowing the Duchy of Brittany to survive as an independent nation in personal union with France.
    • The Inca Empire, with help from the Ming Dynasty, defeats the Spanish conquests, but Spain still vassalizes the Incas. The Incas are not slaughtered, but many of them still succumb to old world diseases.

  • 1576: Duarte, Duke of Guimarães thinks more rationally and doesn't commit suicide, preventing the Portuguese succession crisis of 1580 and the Iberian Union from forming.
