Federal Republic of Indochina

A timeline where the 1954 Geneva Convention were actually abided; three Indochinese states (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia) remains under one country after independence from France; and the Vietnam War never happened.

Divergence from OTL[]

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt did not die in office and remained in the presidency until 1949. Ho Chi Minh's letters to the US President were well received.
  • The Roosevelt administration (unlike the Truman administration in OTL) continuted to maintain a neutral position and did not support French efforts in reclaiming Indochina after WWII.
  • Because of the lack of US support, French control over Indochina during the Indochinese War was much more limited. Viet Minh easily reclaimed a large portion of the country by 1950, and by the time France defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, Viet Minh had virtually controlled most of the countryside.
  • The US abided by Geneva Convention of 1954 (and did not attempt to jeopardize it like in OTL). Roosevelt's idea of the International Trust for Indochina lived on in the form of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Indochina (UNTAI), which was responsible for administering Indochina and organizing a nationwide election after the Geneva Agreements.
  • After independence, Indochina largely kept the original 1946 constitution, which makes the country a multiparty parliamentary republic.
  • Thanks to Roosevelt's support for an international trust of Indochina, the independence movements in Indochina has more pan-Indochinese nationalism appeal than OTL. The Communist Party of Indochina (predecessor of the Viet Minh) was never broken up into national divisions; it later became the Worker's Party of Indochina, a more moderate centre-left parties with progressive stance.
  • The Vietnam War did not happen. Indochina remained neutral throughout the Cold War.

Trivia[]

IRL, the Golden Triangle (also known as the Development Triangle) is a term to describe the strategic partnership between the three countries in the Indochinese peninsula: Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
