  • 1611
    • The Virgin's Land Company is established by King Edward XI of England with the object of colonizing the eastern coast of Norland. The territory granted to the company extends from the 31st parallel (King's Bay) north to the 42nd parallel (Macison's Sound). In April of this year, the Virgin Land Company's three ships, containing 115 men and boys as passengers and 39 crew members, set sail from Bournemouth, England. London-native, colonist, mariner and captain of the lead ship Enlightenment John Carter had several successful ventures in the Insularem under the blessing of the crown. Though primarily a private trader, he had obtained some land rights in the Inland Sea. It is thought that he was involved in the Taino Uprising in modern-day Saint Kitts and Nevis, but the extent of his involvement is debated by scholars. The company sails for four months until they reach landfall northeast of Brier Island. Hereby claiming the land for England, they name the land "Virgin's Land", owing to its natural beauty. Carter has the settlement Hadestown built in a wooded clearing.
  • 1621
    • Determined to stay one step ahead of the English, and noticing the rewards they merited in their colonial ventures in the Hadestown colony, King James VI of Scotland enlists brothers Edwin and Thomas Cowan with the objective of colonizing the northern reaches of Norland. After purchasing their ship and gathering a crew of forty-five men, they set sail for the New World. Arriving in the dead of winter, they encounter rough seas bearing ice along the shores, with Edwin recording that there was so much floating ice that he could barely put his canoe in the water. Many of their men are concerned about the conditions, but the brothers encourage them to carry on. After finally making it ashore in modern day New Glasgow, they find themselves a strange and desolate place, with great snow banks lining the dunes, but Edwin and Thomas see an opportunity and stayed to investigate. Planting a Scottish flag in the snow, they name the land "Nova Scotia", Latin for "New Scotland". Remaining near the shore until more adequate provisions could be acquired, they hunt game such as deer, squirrels, and foxes and fished in the ever-abundant waters. The group even marvels at a whale, which Edwin described as the "most mighty and fierce, yet gentle and alluring creature I ever dared see". When the weather got warmer, they explored the hills and valleys of the Nova Scotian Deepwoods, discovering a secluded community of natives, which they named the Monatawon. Relations are largely peaceful, with both groups treating each other with respect and bartering from time to time. However, both remain weary of one another.
  • 1622-1623
    • With Edwin finding the new land suitable to their needs, and confirming the natives in the area as non-hostile, he requests for more people to move into the settlement. He petitions King James VI, who after affirming his dedication to the Nova Scotian colony, grants charters for more colonial ventures in Nova Scotia and the surrounding regions. In time, more and more people reach the shores of Nova Scotia, including men, women, children, the elderly and even exiled prisoners and slaves. Small settlements begin to appear, and the colonists levy the land for materials and food. They suffer some losses due to the harsh weather during the winter and squalid living conditions. In addition, attacks by bands of native tribes on these settlements cause conflict and turmoil between the colonists and natives. Many begin to doubt the worth of the colony.
      • Tired of the living conditions up north, a young privateer named Daniel Hathington manages to gather a group of like-minded individuals and sets sail down south to establish a settlement of their own, free from the Cowan's ill-preparedness and increasingly unpopular leadership. Eventually, they reach a cape shaped like an arm, as well as several islands farther past it. Noting the rough and mischievous seas, they name the land "Cape Gallus", with "Gallus" meaning misbehaving and playful in Gaelic. They come to establish the Bedford colony on Cape Gallus, which would later become a prominent whaling and fishing port town.
