The Tensions of The Cold War came to a head in 1985, resulting in a devastating, but short war, known because of its duration (3 months) as The Spasm. While there were not the large scale invasions of The Great War and The World War, territory exchanged hands and governments were toppled.

Causes[]

Historians have done their best to chronicle the root causes of The Spasm, but have found myriad reasons, each with their own weight and import on the strained situation that existed in 1985. The primary reasons have been determined, however, and the sum of these and others are believed to have caused the nuclear cataclysm.

  • Yuri Andropov, the Soviet Premier harshly ended talks with US Premier Ronald Reagan and the German Chancellor Erich Honecker during the infamous Iceland Summit. Within days of the Summit the United States of America and Germany had mobilized their missile defenses. Andropov responded by invoking the Kiev Accord and mobilizing all of Russia's defenses as well as those of its allies.
  • Several American satellites in polar orbit were blinded in a three-hour period and communications were jammed for three days, causing US Government officials to fear an invasion or launch against them by Russia. Some of the jamming and blinding has been attributed to an unexpectedly large solar flare that year.
  • The People's Republic of Mexico staged an invasion of the lower reaches of Sonora, which was met with a swift reprisal by the Texan locals, pushing the Mexicans back across their border and into retreat. Within a week the Texans had captured Mexico City, however this open aggression against a communist nation sparked a similar attack by the Russians against German Lithuania
  • As far as records can be found there was no order issued by the Russian government to launch the attack that destroyed Washington D.C., but the retaliatory attacks from the USA and Germany against Russia and the resulting exchanges over the next 3 month period were ordered according to the MAD Doctrine.

Re-districting of Europe, following The Spasm

The Scandinavian Union was not a target of nuclear attack, having been neutral for the first two months of the war. When Moscow was nuked by a joint German and American assault, the Union took advantage of the fact and invaded the entirety of the Kola Peninsula, including Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg and down the Baltic Coast, stripping Lithuania from Germany's hands.

With the destruction of the Central Soviet, the USSR fragmented into the smaller states in a matter of weeks, and intense infighting laid waste to the Middle East and Central Asian steppe. In an odd footnote, a nuclear reactor near Kyiv in the city of Pripyat nearly melted down, but crisis was narrowly averted when the reactors were shutdown, dropping the control rods, halting the reaction. Had this reactor gone critical, it is expected that the food crisis and resulting reprisals among the Russian states would've irradiated much of Eastern Europe.

Within eastern and central Europe a bevy of new states came into existence, the Czechs and Poles both of whom had chafed under the rule of the German Empire united as Czechopoland, Italy fragmented into the Holy See, Padania and Napoli.

Hungary, Greece and Dalmato-Croatia took advantage of the fall of Communism after the Spasm and invaded neighboring countries, increasing their land areas significantly.

Spain fissioned into a Catalan-speaking Aragon and Euskaran-speaking Euskadia. Portugal, fearing reprisals from Spain for its support of Galicia immediately launched talks with Spain. The populace of both countries were surprised as the new Kingdom of Portugal and Castilla was proclaimed.

Greater Ireland secured Brittany to further support the Celtic speaking minority.

Efforts of Unity[]

With the destruction of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Detroit in the nuclear exchanges of the Spasm, the government infrastructure was destroyed, and the nation quickly fragmented.

The Republic of New France took advantage of the power vacuum, moving to secure the whole of the Labrador peninsula and what had been Ontario. Likewise California accepted the petitions of Oregon to leave the fragmented and presumed defunct United States of America.

Re-districting of North America, following The Spasm

The "Redistricting" efforts of the United States, which had been successful in quelling rebellion following the Great and World Wars has remained largely intact since the Spasm, however, with the collapse of the Federal government most states have taken it upon themselves to continue ruling.

While the states initially tried to revive the United States by moving the capital to Chicago, and later St. Louis, these attempts failed and the states agreed to decentralize and become regional unions under an overarching confederation.

This was to be the death knell for the United States as each group of states quickly sought to protect their own interests, and at the First Congress of the Confederation of American States, many senators left in disgust in the first hours, and a senator from Iowa was killed by a Texan delegate.

The regional confederations quickly sought international recognition, and while the population of these regions were typically not more than 30% descendents of the original inhabitants, geographical connotations held sway, giving rise to the Dixieland Confederation, Canadian League, and Texas.

Some of these entities, such as Louisianna and Texas fractured and were subsumed by other regional alliances or became independent. Louisianna was partitioned between the Union Commonwealth and California. Texas on the other hand fractured into the Aztlan Republic and Texicoma.
