Austria-Hungary was a country that simply couldn't survive, being too ethnically diverse. For this reason, many ideas were proposed to fix up this mess — one of which was the United States of Greater Austria, drafted in 1906. Another, however, was the idea of Trialism, a far older concept (1867) that would elevate Croatia to an equal status with Austria and Hungary. This would likely lead to the further decentralization of Austria anyway, but the consequences would be huge. No Great War, a greater Russian-Austrian rivalry in the Balkans, greater animosity with Serbia, an earlier annexation of Bosnia, the further penetration of Austria into the southern Balkans ...
