Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – March 3, 1922) was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. A bold and nationalistic leader of the Democratic Party, he became the champion of the Progressive Era and saw to the United States' victory during World War I.
Born as a sickly child with asthma, Roosevelt overcame his health issues by embracing a strenuous lifestyle. He integrated his exuberant personality, vast range of interests, and world-famous achievements into a "cowboy" persona defined by robust masculinity. Home-schooled, he became a lifelong naturalist before attending Harvard College. After graduating from college, he moved to Dakota and soon went on to serve in the Rough Riders after learning his territory wasn't raising any units for the subsequent Second American War. Despite the American defeat in the war, Roosevelt was renowned as a war hero upon returning to New York City, where he began his political career. Roosevelt ran for the New York State Assembly in 1884 as a Democrat.
After serving a decade as a state assemblyman for a decade, President Grover Cleveland appointed Roosevelt as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1893 to 1897. During his career in Philadelphia, Assistant Secretary Roosevelt made friends with political titans such as Nelson W. Aldrich and Thomas B. Reed, who'd later influence him to run for President later in life. In 1898, Roosevelt ran for the New York State Senate and overwhelmingly won despite the growing influence of the Socialist Party in the state. During his senate tenure, Roosevelt continued to get more political notoriety as he charged with his progressive ideals and championed legislation within the state; as well as challenged the corrupt bosses of Tammany Hall.
Following the election of Nelson W. Aldrich, Roosevelt was appointed as Aldrich's Secretary of War from 1905 to 1909. After leaving office, Roosevelt took a brief rest on politics and led a safari in American Angola for six months. Upon returning to the U.S., Roosevelt ran for Governor of New York and defeated both the Tammany Democrats and Socialists. Seeing the unpopularity and the division within the incumbent Liberal Party, Roosevelt tried his hand at running for President and swiftly won the 1912 election over Liberal Senator Charles W. Fairbanks and Socialist Senator Eugene V. Debs of Indiana.
Roosevelt hoped to champion the same progressive ideals he had pushed as Governor of New York, however his ambitions were stopped short with the outbreak of World War I. The president used the Confederate States declaring war on Germany to justify American intervention. Roosevelt gained Congress' and Henry IV's approval to declare war; beginning his reign as a wartime president.
After leaving office, Roosevelt led a safari in the recently conquered Congo, which resulted in him dying from malaria.
