- March 15 — Ivan Kuskov, on behalf of the Russian-American Company, arrives in Alta California to establish a trading port for the Russian Empire.

- September 11 — Fort Ross is completed and dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia (on the day of his namesake).

- November — Hippolyte Bouchard makes a quick visit to the Ross Colony before their raid of Monterey.

- Unknown — (Battle of Fort Ross) — A Spanish expedition force arrives at Fort Ross and demands the surrender of the colony. Being aware of the Spanish fleet, the Russians fight back and force the retreat of the Spanish ships.
- September 4 — (Ukase of 1821) Tsar Alexander I of Russia proclaims the expansion of Russia's territorial claims to North America as far south as the Golden Gate. The edict doesn't address the issue of foreign vessels.
- September 28 — (Treaty of Córdoba) New Spain declares their independence as the Mexican Empire.

- October 20 — (Congress of Verona) Tsar Alexander I of Russia offers to march 150,000 Russian troops to assist France in their overthrow of the Liberal government in Spain. Despite French opposition, the recent attempt by Spain to seize Fort Ross dampened the opposition.
- 1823
- April — (Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis) French and Russian soldiers march into Spain. Madrid is easily captured and occupied.

- August 17 — (Russo-American Treaty of 1824) The Russian Empire and the United States finalize their borders in North America. The USA recognizes Russia's territorial claims west of the Rocky Mountains (the Great Divide), in exchange for open trade between the two in the region.
- 1825
- February 28 — (Treaty of Saint Petersburg) The Russian Empire and the United Kingdom finalize their borders in North America. The Columbia River is defined as the boundary between the Columbia District in the north and Russian Oregon in the south. The treaty failed to define the northern boundaries between the two, with the Russians claiming the 51st Parallel (the "line of the Emperor Paul") and the British claiming the 54th Parallel and 40 Minutes.

- December — Dmitry Zavalishin is given permission to negotiate with the Mexican Empire to purchase more territory in Alta California. Mexico agrees to sell their territories west of the Sacramento River.

- February 18 — The Russian Empire renegotiate their terms with the Russian-America Company, in which the administrative duties of Russian America are transferred to Saint Petersburg. The territory is formally organized into three oblasts: Alaska (Pavlovskaya Gavan), Sitka (New Archangel), and Oregon (Vladikaskady).

- January 24 — Employees of Juan Suter (a German-born Mexican) discover gold in Alta California. News of the discovery would spark the California Gold Rush.

- September 9 — The Sonoma Oblast is formally established, with Ross as its capital.

Negotiation of the Columbia Sale.
- March 30 — (Columbia Sale) The Russian Empire acquires the Colony of Vancouver Island and Columbia from the United Kingdom.
- October 18 — The Columbia Oblast is formally established, ending British rule over Columbia.

Vote for Alaskan Independence.
- March 8 — The State Duma of Russian America vote overwhelmingly in favor of gaining independence from the Russian Empire and the establishment of an Alaskan Republic.
- July 21 — Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The Russian Empire ends and is replaced with the short-lived Russian Republic.
- November 7 — (October Revolution) Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks storm the Winter Palace and cease power. A communist state is proclaimed and marks the beginning of the Russian Civil War.

- January 4 — The Russian SFSR recognizes the independence of Alaska and Finland.

Eruption of Yeleninskaya Sopka.
- May 18 — Yeleninskaya Sopka, a volcano in the southern Columbia Governorate, erupts. Registered as a VEI 5 event and killing 57 people, this eruption was one of the worst volcanic eruptions in North America in recent history.
