The Timor War, also known as the Timor Conflict, was an armed conflict fought between the Republic of Indonesia and the People's Democratic Republic of TimorLeste and their allies from December 1977 to July 1980 over fear that Timor—Leste would spread communism to Asia/Oceania.

The Timor War was a conflict of the Cold Warera (Communist aligned) that occurred mainly in the southeast Asian and Oceanian nation of Indonesia, as well as recently independent Portugese territory TimorLeste on the island of Timor.

Indonesia was supported by it's allies South Korea, Formosa, Malaysia and The Phillippines; and TimorLeste was supported by it's allies mainly China, the Soviet Union, and Mozambique; while Australia, the UK, and the US were on the side of Indonesia until Mid-1978 after recieving information that Indonesia was committing acts of famine and torture against the Timorese people.

Indonesia has always had tensions with TimorLeste since it's independence from Portugal in 1975. With tensions beginning since Timor-Leste took possession of the northern part of Indonesia's Timor Province in 1976.

Unofficially the war began as early as February 1975, namely the result of Indonesian expansion into TimorLeste and heavy skirmishing between Indonesian and Timorese troops.

Background[]

TimorLeste owes its territorial distinctiveness from the rest of Timor, and the Indonesian archipelago as a whole, to being colonised by the Portuguese, rather than the Dutch; of which dates to an agreement dividing the island between the two powers signed in 1915.

Dutch and Portugese colonys in Asia were overtaken by Japan during World War II, whose occupation of the island created a resistance movement that resulted in the deaths of 60,000 people, 13% of the population at the time. Following the war, the Dutch East Indies secured its independence as the Republic of Indonesia in 1945; and the Portuguese, meanwhile, reestablished control over TimorLeste.
