The Republic of Tinariwen (Tamasheq: ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ ⵏ ⵜⵉⵏⵉⵔⵉ) is a sovereign state in northern Ethiopia, covering much of the western regions of the Ténéré Desert. It is populated mainly by various nomadic Tuareg peoples, though parts of the south are heavily settled, including the capital, Timbuktu.

The region was formerly covered by several different states, including the Mali, Songhai and Moroccan Empires. After the First World War it was claimed by Africa, which progressively explored and occupied the area as far as the Orimiri River. Although it was treated as an integral part of the kingdom, nationalist and anti-African sentiments were common from the very beginning, which eventually forced Africa to grant it independence in 19**.
