In 1972, Turkish troops landed in Northern Cyprus, where they fought Cypriot and Greek troops. However, despite their combined efforts, Greece had many internal problems of its own, and international eyes were away from the scene. A few battles occurred where British forces in Akrotiri and Dhekalia attempted to defend against them, but the British forces mainly remained in their bases. By the end of the year Greek forces had been pushed off the Island and the entire island annexed, leaving just the British troops in their bases. Turkey quickly issued an Ultimatum to the Brits to leave the Island or be forcibly removed.

The British troops, not seeing an alternative, quickly left the island, accomplied by some Greek Cypriots, and landed in Malta.
