The United Kingdom of Great Britain, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK), Britain, or the United Kingdom of the GBSGTG, is an island country in Northwestern Europe, off the north-western coast of the continental mainland, with territories in Africa, and North America. It comprises England, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. The United Kingdom is bordered by nine countries, mainland Britain is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea. The total area of the United Kingdom is 213,346 square miles (552,563 km2), making it the fifth biggest country in Europe by size, and the thirtyfourth in the World. With an estimated 2023 population of almost 90 million people, that makes it the second most populated country in Europe, and sixteenth most-populated in the World.
The United Kingdom, formed through annexations, unions, and separations over centuries, was the first industrialized country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Treaty of Union between England and Scotland in 1707 led to the unification of the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, it united with Ireland, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, however Ireland would secede in 1916, following World War One. In 1941, France would invade mainland Great Britain, establishing the Imperial Federation, forcing the Royal Family to escape to its colonies, leading to two Britains forming. In 1995, they would reunite. British influence can be seen in the language, culture, legal, and political systems of its former colonies, and its culture remains globally influential in literature, music, and sport.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with London as its capital and as the largest city. It is home to major cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Hong Kong. The UK is divided into fourteen legal jurisdictions:England, Wales and Cornwall, Scotland, Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Zanzibar, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Seychelles, Hong Kong, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Ellice Islands, and Gilbert and Ellice Islands and each with its own devolved governments and legislatures since 1998.
The UK has the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), and the tenth-largest by purchasing power parity. It is a recognised nuclear state and is ranked sixth globally in military expenditure. The UK has been a permanent member of OFN Court of International Security and Justice since its first session in 1966. It is a member of OUN, Commonwealth of Nations, the Strasbourg Pact, PATO, CANZUKUS, CAUKNNZ, OFTA, CAUKN and the GCPP.
