The United Nations is an International Organisation promoting world cooperation. It was set up in 1945 after its predecessor, the League of Nations, failed to prevent the Second World War. While at its founding it had just 51 member states, it now has 194, with the recent addition of Scotland. Its headquarters are located in International Territory in New York City, with further offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi.
