The United States of America is a federal republic occupying much of central North America, as well as numerous external territories in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Immediately following independence from the United Kingdom in 1776, the country was composed of 13 States, each of which was a former colony of the British Empire; but since then, many more States have been admitted by various means, and the country now contains 48 States. There are several movements for the creation of more states, most notably in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.
