The United States of America; colloquially known as the United States, the USA, the US, and America; is a sovereign state located in North America. The nation is bordered by Borealia and Canada in the north; Acadia in the northeast; Texas in the southwest; Alaska in the northwest; and Mexico and New Granada via Panama. Washington, D.C. is the capital while New York City is the most populous. The United States is geographically dominated by the Great Lakes in the north and the Mississippi River in the south.

Originally a series of colonies of Great Britain, the United States of America declared their independence on July 4, 1776. From their original territory; the US expanded by purchasing Louisiana from France in 1804, annexing Upper Canada in 1845, and annexing Panama and several islands in the Caribbean throughout the late-19th and early-20th Century.

After World War II, the United States emerged as one of the predominant superpowers (along with the Soviet Union). Today, the US has one of the largest economies and armed forces in the world.
