The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US), or America is a federal republic in North America. It borders Alaska to the west and the Danish possession of Kongens land to the north, Mexico and the Spanish possession of Florida to the south. The US is comprised of 58 states. By some counts, it is the largest nation on earth. Despite this it only has a population of 157 million, 9th place overall. The national capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city by land and population is New York City. It is a founding member of the UN, and is a member of NATO. The nation has been inhabited by Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Around 400 years ago Europeans started to arrive, adding large amounts of people with English, Irish, German, Polish, Scandinavian and Scottish ancestry, as well as a large slave population from Africa. Less than 100 years later the colonies revolted against British rule and then spread across the continent, fighting natives, Mexicans, Brits, Russians and Canadians. Their expansion began to be viewed as a threat by European powers, who fought to limit it's expansion and cause internal strife. The result of this can still be felt today, terrorist insurgencies and race riots are a common sight in some areas. The nation is vey mixed developmentally. Some states enjoy a high standard of living and have large amounts of social and economic growth, while others have populations that live in third world conditions.
