In 1814, Uruguay gained their independence from Spain by a revolution with Jose Gervasio Artigas, who became a national hero. He formed the Liga Federal (Federal League), of which he was declared the Protector, or dictator. In August 1816, due to the rising star of Uruguay, Portugal, with Brazilian approval, invaded Uruguay, finally defeated Artigas at the Battle of Tacuarembo, and Uruguay was annexed into Brazil. Then, Brazil became independent from Portugal, and in 1825, Uruguay was “un-annexed”. The nation's first constitution was adopted in 1830. Before Doomsday, Uruguay was one of the most successful South American nations.
