The Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis, also called the 2012-2013 Taiwan Strait Crisis, resulted from the People's Republic of China mobilizing for an invasion of Taiwan as a front to cover-up internal Solanum outbreaks within the mainland. In beginning days of November 2012, the People's Liberation Army began a massive exercise in the Guangdong Province, meant to simulate an amphibious assault on Taiwan. This was followed by ballistic missiles strikes and huge naval and aerial formations over the Straits of Taiwan. Following the massive Chinese exercise, Taiwanese President Ma Jing-yeo declared a state-of-emergency throughout Taiwan. The entirety of the ROC Armed Forces were mobilized for the first time since the 1995-1996 Strait Crisis including reservists while civil-defense plans were being enacted. At the same time, this was done to prepare Taiwan to handle the upcoming Solanum outbreak which was spreading into China's neighboring countries.

Despite the show of force, there were no casualties from the crisis. Only naval and air incursions occurred over Taiwan's EEZ, which were promptly escorted into international waters or airspace by the ROC Armed Forces.

It was notable the crisis began at the same week the United States would have its presidential elections. This caused international media sensation as the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet was deployed to the region to assist in the defense of Taiwan.

After six months of tensions, the crisis abruptly ended as the Great Panic began and the international community realized the seriousness of the Solanum Virus and the uselessness of the Phalanx vaccine against the virus. Both sides immediately withdrew their forces to combat the hordes of zombies. Ironically, Taiwan outlasted China in handling the virus, becoming one of the few East Asian states that effectively combated Solanum as it only lost 10% of its population and territory from the zombies.

South China Sea tensions

Tensions in the South China Sea began on April 8, 2012 when the China Marine Surveillance blocked the Philippine Navy from arresting Chinese fishermen that were illegally harvesting sharks, clams, and corals in the Scarborough Shoal. For two months, the BRP Gregorio del Pilar faced off with Chinese ships until an agreement was made to withdraw. However, China did not follow the agreement and promptly seized the shoal after the Philippine Navy withdrew. As a result, diplomatic relations with the Philippines and China soured. There were reports of website hackings on both sides while protests erupted on the Chinese Embassy in Manila. While the United States affirmed it would not take sides of the dispute, the country has affirmed that the 1951 Mutual Defense Agreement is still in effect.

East China Sea tensions

In September 2012, relations between China and Japan soured after China Marine Surveillance ships nearly collided with Japan Coast Guard ships near the Senkaku Islands (Chinese: Diayou Islands). The Chinese claim the part of the islands as their territory since ancient times. Japan had similar confrontations with Taiwan prior to engaging the Chinese vessels. Japan finalized the deal to purchase the islands the same month, angering China and Taiwan. Meanwhile, the United States affirmed that it would defend Japan in an event of foreign aggression. This resulted in massive anti-Japanese sentiment in China, fueled by memories of Japanese atrocities during World War II. Japanese restaurants and car showrooms were attacked by angry Chinese citizens. Japan would later advice any Japanese nationals in China to evacuate,

Solanum Outbreak In China

Unknowingly to the international community, a new rabid-like virus was occurring in China as tensions in the South China Sea and the East China Sea was ongoing. Various video leaks showed aggressive people attacking others while men in suits and paramilitary outfits attempt to restrain them and round them up in unmarked vans. China would officially state that the CCP was doing a "massive round-up of dissidents". Chinese state media such as CCTV, The Global Times, The People's Daily, and Xinhua News would cover up such outbreaks. Unknown to the Chinese, several intelligence agencies such as the CIA, MI6, DGSE, Mossad, and the FSB were aware that these dissidents were infected with the Solanum Virus and were in-fact a biohazard to human lives. Countries such as Israel prepared building a massive wall around the country while the United States and the United Kingdom would prepare their covert operations in combating the Infected across third-world nations in the world.

Knowing that the story of the Infected would eventually leak out, the People's Liberation Army began a massive mobilization of its ground forces and naval fleet not seen since the 1995-96 Taiwan Strait Crisis. The fleet would be lead by the new Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, which was newly commissioned on September 25, 2012.

2012 United States Presidential Elections

The Fourth Taiwan Strait crisis began just four days before the United States held its presidential elections. During the elections, the Big Three Networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) along with CNN were mainly covering the election night while during breaks, the current Taiwan situation would be covered. The ratings for all networks were high as it cover both stories simultaneously. Candidates for the Democrats and the Republicans were asked how they would deal with the current crisis in the Straits. The Democrats won reelection into the White House, which was now focused on renewed arms sales to Taiwan.
