After puttering around doing admin-type stuff for a couple of months, I've decided to stay. The current TSPTF have done an incredible job fixing this wiki. Chat, the Map Games, discussions on user rights... all of the things that used to provoke daily flamewars and factions have instead become focused once again on alternate history. The wiki is again a fun place to work on timelines and discuss the work of others. So I've put myself onto the active admin list. I hope this blog post doesn't come off as self-aggrandizing - I'm not such a big deal that returning has to be some kind of Event. But I do think that for transparency's sake I should do something to announce it to the community. So here I am. Thanks to everyone who is contributing …Read more >
Four years ago I came back for a few months, only to find that AHWiki was in as much turmoil as it had been the first time that I stepped away. How lovely to come back and see that things have evidently calmed way, way down, but the site still lively and active. I'm sure there's a story. Maybe someone would like to tell me about it sometime. But it's good to see the community focused on creating Alternate History again. I'm not ready to commit to a return to Active Duty, but I'm definitely going to hang out a little while, tinker with my timelines, maybe do something about the giant backlog at Category:Delete... and I guess I ought to sign up for Discord, since that's where the discussion happens now. Either way, even a quick look at the T…Read more >
The TSPTF talk page is getting repetitive. Hateful talk on Chat, drama on Chat, misbehavior on Chat, abuse of power on Chat, factionalism on Chat. I've enjoyed going on Chat since I discovered it (see 2 blog posts ago). In other circumstances, it would be a great medium for what this wiki is supposed to be about, developing settings within the genre of Alternate History. Chat's good for brainstorming and bouncing around ideas. And some of that goes on. But not enough compared to the conflicts and the ugliness, which spill over to the rest of our site and do an incredible amount of damage to our community. Chat does too little good and too much damage to justify its continued existence.
Eliminating Chat won't solve all the problems in the Wi…Read more >
Today is the last day to nominate foods from our alternate history worlds for Wikia's Battle of the Fantasy Foods tournament. I nominated 1983 Doomsday's , and I hope at least one or two people seconded the nomination. Let's get some much-deserved attention for our community! What's up, everyone.
I've been poking around here these last few days. And despite the drama that seems to be all the rage these days, I just might be staying, at least for a while.
But my biggest surprise upon returning is not the new faces or the decline in civility. It's various things that aren't new at all, but which I had never seen before. All because of a change in skin.
See, when I first joined I chose to use Wikia with the Monobook skin. I found it to be cleaner and more attractive and closer to what I was used to on Wikipedia. But unbeknownst to me, Wikia kept adding features throughout my years here. but did not make those featuers visible in Monobook. It was not just that I didn't know, but I had no way of knowing that I di…Read more >
