I am presenting the political parties of the Government Simulation a problem that we will need to solve. My hope is that this becomes a differing issue between parties, and fosters some good discussion.

Originally when I made the simulation I sought to make a senate that used a Mixed-member proportional representation system for electing senators (Please watch this video if you are unsure what this is). At least that's how it's supposed to work in theory. Here are some possible alterations to the voting system that we could implement or reform. Roughly each set of statements goes from progressive to centrist to communist/labour to conservative, based on what I gathered from their members, their claimed ideologies, and past treads. Find which statement you agree with:

Elections

  • I believe that the elections should work as they did previously, where everyone gets two votes, and that equals two seats.
  • I believe that the senate should be elected using a true MMP system. Instead of having two votes equaling two seats, it should work as MMP was intended, where seats are added using the second vote where needed, not to artificially double the count. Originally two votes equaling two seats worked as a shortcut way to do it, but no longer do people use their second vote to vote for separate parties, trying to max out the votes for their party.
  • The system should be less complex. Why not have just one vote instead of two.

Number of Seats

  • The number of seats should progressive, meaning it is determined by the number of votes received.
  • The number of seats should be proportional, meaning it's a percentage of votes received.
  • The number of seats should be a set number that can be changed accordingly for the next election based on past turnout.
  • The number of seats should be a set number of seats regardless of number of votes.

Seat Change

  • There should be more seats to represent more people, as they begin to join the simulation.
  • Regardless of whether or not number of seats are set, there should be about the same number of seats as there are now.
  • Things would work better if things were more contained. There should be less seats overall.

Senate Voting

  • When legislation is proposed, voting should be weighted according to the number of hypothetical senators, meaning if Party A has twenty seats from the election, and one person from the party votes no while another votes yes, then that's ten votes no and ten votes yes.
  • Senatorial votes should be weighted, but as an overall percentage of party membership, meaning if Party A has five members and twenty seats, then each person's vote is equal to four votes, regardless of how many people from the party vote or not. That way people actually have to participate in votes to get them to pass.
  • When legislation is proposed, if it gets a majority of votes from people it should be passed, regardless of how many seats there are.

Feel free to debate it in the comments, and at the end let's have an act proposed. Also let me know if I missed any related positions.
