Hello there! I've come up with the following Scenario, which, once I've expanded my current TL , which i'll continue to work on, I intend to start.
In OTL, during the '50's Germany and France, as well as the Low Countries and Italy, had started to discuss the creation of what would eventually become the European Union, which, while engaging the mainland, Britain would feel distant from for decades. However, at this time a second option was proposed: "Plan G". This was a strategy to either create an European Trade Community while favouring the status of the Commonwealth, or inviting various European Countries to the Commonwealth.
The Scenario, therefore, imagines what would have happened if the Commonwealth invited, first European Countriies, and later other trade partners such as the United States and Japan, as well as Ireland rejoining. Eventually the Commonwealth takes a form closer to the EU, with an elected Parliament meeting, and becomes the leading world organisation, after the UN.
In the 1990's, with stronger nearby trading partners, only the New Territories cede to China, with Hong Kong itsef joining the Commonwealth as a British Overseas Territory.
This, of course, has quite a chance of becoming ASB, but I hope to keep it within the realms of possibiity.
