Alternative History

Following the success of of my mentees blog series of Sensual Sky Weekends I decided that maybe I should try to revive the wiki. I have decided to make a series of blogs looking into different Althist concepts.

Todays Concept: Today I will be exploring the outcomes of Otto von Habsburgs, the last crown prince of Austria offer from Franco to become King of Spain after his death.

Posible Outcomes:

  • Public opinion in Spain would probably be more anti-monarchy because it is not a ruler who is culturally associated with Spain. The current approval ratings for the Spanish monarchy is 55%, and has dipped as low as 50%. I could see Otto von Habsburg pulling a Amedeo, meaning he is only in the throne for a few years before he is deposed.
  • Another negative impact is we don't know if he would have transitioned Spain to democracy, like Juan-Carlos did.
  • One of the positive differences that could have come out of this is a more pro-european Spain. von Habsburg, who served in the European parliament, was a champion of european unity. He lead the international Paneuropean Union. He also left a seat in the european parliament open for the eastern bloc nations.

Conclusion: Overall I don't think that Spain would be that different from today, might be a Republic, might be more influential in the European Union. I do think in some Alternate universe Otto Von Habsburg is the best Emperor Holy Rome or Austria has ever seen.
