Presidential Election Game
You're receiving this message because you either register in the most recent polls or because you're a Republican in the game (no polls out for them). I recognize that the game hasn't moved very quickly or as much as most players would like. I am working on that with Vatonica, since I have a lot of ideas but it's his game so I can't change anything on my own unless I become a mod. That being said, are you still interested? This is a unique game and has the ability to be very fun with the right adjustments! For now, I am putting on an unsanctioned candidates' forum that will either be today or tomorrow, where candidates can come and discuss their ideas/answer questions. Would you be interested in that? Let me know if you are! I'm sure this will be a fun idea for the game. If you yourself have any ideas, please let me know! AP (talk)
So i have applied for a mod position, and signed up in the new map game, and would very much like to contribute to multiple things. The Map, nations list, a whole slew of things. If you wish to see me as a mod so be it, and if you dont ill understand.
Outside of This i signed up as Muscovy taking it from Person67 (i think thats how it said it works, if you had higher edit count and were reliable you had a priority) if thats not how it works let me know and remove me, ill choose someone else, but regardless i would love to play as Muscovy and will reign in my competitive behavior for the game for the sake of making the game fun.
Game wise, if you need an algo i can work on one that can be turned or fixed as the years go on, but i think as well developing a tech tree or figuring out a way to quantify nations or have certain shortfalls be made up by say a numbers gap (within reason). Just some suggestions, but id really like to see this game take off.
Okay cool good to know i did everything by the book.
As for the algo, i was thinking more along the lines of taking technology and manpower into account. The AvA style is too simple and ignored to many major things to be considered IMO. The Algo also needs to change as the warfare type changes. a WW2/Modern War algo will most certainly not work the same in a setting such as the 16th-19th centuries (which i think is also different as until the advent of Gun dominant warfate. Its like taking into account modern power designation and applying it to something like the Byzantine Empire or Poland-Lithuania.
What i suggest is a few things. We need to implement a technology system that one can graduate out of, but will also severely restrict certain states from developing way to quickly. Like say an american tribe going from a tribal network of maybe a few thousand to a cosmopolitan empire of a few million in the span of a few decades (Staring a PMIII's Mississippia). So essentially its like an EUIV technological mechanic, that i say is modified that has a three major technological tiers, and with certain important nations (not necessarily large) taking the lead in a certain technological tier and reaping the benefits.
The Dutch for example would heavily specialize in diplomatic/trade technology which means they will have a huge navy, alot of money, and the ability to make up for their lack of manpower or technologically advanced military with mercenaries and arms purchases and even attracting specialized weapons producers. (This was the case OTL, and up until the Dutch Banking clans migrated to England, the Dutch were a great power with little population that punched well above their weight.)
Another Example would be Muscovy/Russia which could for example specialize in an Administrative, or Military technological area. The Russians OTL administratively had a pretty low brow but effective system that while backward, lasted and in some cases flourished until the 1800's and brought about high russification of many conquered territories. Their Military example of their administration is probably the best due to the Fact that Russia for most of its post 1500's History was just a massive manpower sink that effectively used their manpower as their quality weaponry. Fighting better teched out Poland or Austria? Drown them in manpower, and hence reap the benefits of having a massive manpower base to draw out a huge military from. If a war between Russia and Poland is going badly for Russia, a Viable strategy is just raise 2 more armies and outflank the singular Polish Army or use the two armies to seize important territory, while the original Russian army plays interference. The Russians essentially gain a huge strategic advantage in the specialization towards administrative ideas that essentially could balance out say a military that 5-10 years behind, with enough manpower to make say a technoligically superior military from Poland absolutely useless as they would lose to many troops, or the army would become exhausted after fighting not one but two armies only having a third huge Russian army show up to finish the job and play occupation from then on out.
Other ideas i have would be along the lines of how DoW played out algo wise. Troops strength, technology, and support matters. If you have a 20,000 strong Army supported by 5000 cavalry, this should be reflected, Development scores and whatnot are in general a pretty outdated concept, and i think in general plausible nations dont just not develop in some ways. Outside a few glaring cases (looking at venezuela or north korea here) every state and its government tries to improve its own position in some way even when their leaders are total dingbats. Case and point would be Revolutionary France. They effectively have a government that collapses and reforms every other week yet manage to not only beat down a coalition to restore a monarchy, but expand territorially and manage to form an empire... THE GOVERNMENT WAS BEHEADING EVERYONE AND STILL THEY MADE AN EMPIRE.
If you want more details i can get into them tomorrow with you, but i beg you, none of the old algo/development score nonsense. I can get into more detail on how to substitute that, but development scores i feel heavily skew algorithms that can just as easily be rectified with a fixed point for every development/production queue that we can classify nations under.
Spain for example would be a top tier nation, albeit with its own problems, its a solidly productive nation, with a relatively large population It would fall into Great Power category (which bears no bonus aside from being able to more adamantly lead in technology in alot of cases)
When considering Spain military strength say in 1550 she was at her Zenith, Her Homebased military was nearly all veteran, it was large in the 10's of thousands, and the nation had essentially been fighting and winning nonstop, alone for nearly 80 years against tons of opponents. This would give her the Top tier Military score, which would be say a +20 for examples sake.
Her Economy as well is also booming (The Future is bleak as we all know) but right now Spain has gold and silver flowing into the country by the shipload, she can finance her wars abroad seemingly indefinitely, and if she invests right then the Spanish gold and silver may also turn her primarily agricultural base into a true production or trade powerhouse like the Dutch did with all their money. As we know OTL the Spanish outsourced their production to the English and Dutch who send finished goods to Spain, who went about fighting her wars until the gold stopped flowing and the empire became an mismanaged monstrosity. Thats besides the point, for the 1550's example Spain is at her Imperial Zenith and maintains a Top tier economic score of +20 as well.
Those will be the two main focus and while military is less flexible just due to good leaders being alive for awhile, an economy is alot more flexible. Spain losing a colony or having her gold trade interrupted for whatever reason could easily drop Spain down to a moderate economy with a measely +10
Outside of this, and attuning to your wanting a quality game, this means we need quality war. That means you cant just write that your sending 50,000 troops to a front and hoping for the numbers from some arbitrary score due to your development scores (which always end up being questioned cause some asshole decided to comb through posts back 30 years) You should require objectives, some forthought, are you setting up defenses, are you going to make the enemy force a decisive engagement across of a river, are you just going to surround the city and starve them out, or do you want to brave the castle walls and storm it. I required objectives and whatnot in DoW and the players that waged war (Nathan for example) were not able to argue the "well i took the whole region with this algo" when its cleary a fight for a city which is alot more specialized than seizing a whole region. Along side this, the objective system as well as territory being seized with no resistance was doable. You could legitimately seize whole regions with little to no resistance if the enemy didnt have a standing army in the Region. This would also help promote alot of co-operative play with players in wars, because they can just send troops to a front for a big congregated total. Those will exist in some form in my algo, but if the front extends from Vienna to Mecklenburg i cant very well count that as part of the same Algorithm and the opposing forces would have to fight.
On top of that, Fortification will have a major say in how war can be conduction in these situations. You can opt to bypass a well defended city and just starve it out, but you would have to leave behind a seige force to keep the bottled up and prevent them from coming from behind and attacking. It essentially forces enemies to take a real risk with their strategy. If you can realistically carpet seige a whole country, then the option is open, but if you wanted to bypass Vienna on your way to obliterate some poor player in Saxony, your leaving your entire rear open to a massive attack by an Austrian army. Bypassing it makes almost no sense.
One of the most exciting things i see out of this is the possibility of allowing for the wars of OTL to take place in some fashion. Alot of nations switched sides constantly. Brandenburg during the Great Northern war switched sides roughly 3 times (maybe more id need to read up again) but they eventually managed to get concessions from both Poland, and Sweden that de facto guarenteed their independence, due to their ability to switch sides. AvA and the former PMIII algos really didnt allow for that. Sure people switched sides, but the effect was a change in a few points and a name switching over to the other side rather than a concrete army that has just jumped ship and is now your enemy. This would also allow three way wars (cool concept) which can be implemented due to the Battle by Battle algo that this entails. There is also next to no limit on how many battles one could do. As long as your Army is functioning and has men to throw into the fray you can conduct battles. Two highly aggressive players could easily throw the time in and conduct alot of battles, and incurring alot of casualties, but it would also greatly enrich the history of the game. PMIII i feel like had a noticeable lack of pivotal battles and more had a focus on the grande scheme of the war. My experience with Dawn of War however came as a surprise as there are two standout cases. The USSR and US fighting in Chins particularly around Beijing, culminating in nearly 4 major battles in northern china alone. Or the fight between the FoA and the US in Indonesia which saw islands constantly changing hands, the Java offensive which saw the US and Feds fight for nearly 2 years over a single city near the coast of Java, and a major battle on New Guinea.
Well i kinda got carried away but i have alot of a good ideas, and got alot of good new experience from DoW that i think would be helpful in enriching and making the game and the way the players experience it much much better.
I will be on chat late tonight, but overall i can get to work by sunday night or monday. I talked with another mod, Reximus who agrees that this is a good idea and if implemented correctly would add alot to the game. It would just be "the Great northern war saw the changes of these territories". It would lead to alot of in depth battles over territory, real strategy, you would be able to switch sides with no issue and the previous contribution wouldnt be discounted. (alot of the 1500's and 1600's wars had people switching sides constantly).
In all honesty it would also give us the ability to more accurately determine who the true victor in wars were. It would also prevent someone from exploiting people leaving for a weekend since the lack of time determining development scores like many other games wouldnt leave super power nations or even extremely weak ones at a disadvantage cause something in real life had come up. I dont think its fair for nations to be punished when very rarely do nations just not develop at all in any way.
When discussing with Rex, about the various technologies and focuses and whatnot, the various beneficial areas for this could easily make the game a better experience for all. especially in how it deals with player strategy. It fosters alot of critical thinking, and in some cases the ability of your diplomacy can easily turn you from a moderately populated German trade city into a short term military powerhouse because mercenaries get hired to beef them up. This could turn a city like hamburg into a competior and for once doesnt just allow larger nations to outright steamroll like they usuall can in these games. This would also prevent alot of issues like what happened in PMIII with the Holy Roman Empire. once a few nations got rolling, they were able to vassalize or steamroll through multiple areas of the HRE with little to no opposition when in reality alot of these German minors would and probably could come together and be a real pain in the Ass.
Regardless i think since i have the basis for it down and Rex also had a few good ideas i thought would be good to implement i can have something in the moderate stage of completion by monday or tuesday. Outside of That im going to delve into some historical maps at my disposal through my historical library to rectify a few things on the map, or at the least present my findings to everyone to get the map on the right track.

Scotland Player In Ninety-Five Theses
Good day, Saturn. My friend, http://althistory.wikia.com/wiki/User:Nicktc was wondering if he'd be allowed to replace Scotland's player if he wished to join Ninety-Five Theses, having read the Sign-Up Rules on the talk page. He is not yet sure if he wishes to join, so if your answer is yes, you do not have to clear Scotland's place yet. Hoping you are not too busy lately, --Constantinus Byzantinus Maximus Talk At Me 00:55, February 10, 2016 (UTC)
My friend is currently not sure how to interpret the rules, and would like to know if he is supposed to replace the current player himself, or wait for you or another mod to do it. I have told him that, based upon the rules and your response he should do it himself, but. Hoping you are well, --Constantinus Byzantinus Maximus Talk At Me 20:39, February 10, 2016 (UTC)
Joining Map Game
Hi Saturn, after speaking with the guys in chat I was wondering if it would be alright if I signed up to the map game? It took a lot of looking but i finally settled on Kabul if that's alright?
I'm currently associating myself with the rules, but would love to take part, especially as Kabul in 1517 was the realm of Babur, 9 years prior to his expansion into India and formation of the Mughal Empire! But I won't give away too much of my plans haha.
Hopefully this is alright, look forward to hearing from you!
Hey, if you wanted a neutral mod to help with the game, I'm available. I don't have enough time to play myself, but I can certainly pitch in with management. I can also help with the map if needed. Cour *talk* 16:01, February 10, 2016 (UTC)
Ninety five these mod event
Hi, I am currently playing as Sweden and the mod event concerning the Kalmar Union is inaccurate. The event was, In Denmark, Frederick, the uncle of Christian II, takes the throne of Denmark and Sweden. This results in some minor instability as there is a new king of vast territories and multiple peoples, but the transition is generally smooth. In the previous year I had elected my own king in Sweden and had called for his election in both Norway and Denmark in order to preserve the union as a mod response and I never got a response. I am just asking you to look at my previous post, compare it to this event, and then fix it as you see fit. Thanks! Redbaran45 (talk) 01:27, February 16, 2016 (UTC)
Reaction to Sistan
Hey Sat! I'm just wondering if I can react to the Sistan rejecting my offer or do I have to wait until next turn? The ultimatum was to lead to conflict if they refused, can I add that as they send for their back up I then march on the city? I am after all camped outside it. I'll write a response but if I have to wait Let me know before the next turn starts if you can. Many thanks! ;)
95T map error
Hey i would like to put it out there that the map for muscovy is a bit off. in there was a northern principality known as Great Perm which was annexed in 1505 and was stradled up against the Ural mountains. Pita said its fine (wanted to double check with other mods before doing anything) but i figured id check with you too. I was going to go ahead and add the missing part of mucovy that was missed with the annexations of Perm and Novogorod
List of territories missed: back end of the Kola peninsula other parts of the rear area of Korealia A massive stretch of territory missing between Muscovy and Perm (so moved up to the Urals)
Hey Saturn, a lot of the mods seem rather run off their feet and it is starting to mean players are delayed making their entries. I just thought I'd offer up my free time as I am on and off the site pretty much all day. I'd be more than happy to help with NPC responces as they seem to be left to whoever can be bugged the most. The risk is people getting frustrated and abandoning the project and I think we're doing very well.
I've noticed you haven't been here in a while. Love to catch up with you on chat soon.
My apologies. I was not aware of the fact that you no longer use your old account, Saturn120. Orangebird763 notified me that "Saturn120 is blocked, so the US will not function under him." I presume he was equally ignorant of this fact.
