Vandalia, officially the Republic of Vandalia, is a country located in central North America. The future Vandalian territory was originally incorporated into the Viceroyalty of Louisiana by the French. They founded the settlements of Saint Genevieve in 1721 and Saint Marianne in 1735, which were hubs for trade and military activity between Louisiana and the Canadas in New France. Frontier living accommodated the building of farms, ranches, and modest manor homes. Eventually, the region was seized by the British in the Second Anglo-French War (1760-1768), though their expansion was countered at the Fares River. The British settled it amid growing resistance by increasingly displaced natives, with near-frequent disputes over land use, the boundaries of forts and settlements, and the rule of law. Several Native American fighting bands were established in the colony and its adjoining regions to drive the colonists out and take back their homeland. However, they were ultimately unsuccessful, and were either destroyed, relocated to reservations, or forced to assimilate into colonial society. In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution swept the region, creating wealth in the transportation and manufacturing sectors and opening up vast tracts of land to citizens. In addition, farmers banded together in political and socioeconomic alliances, giving way to an underground populist culture that battled the corrupt and inefficient social institutions of the Old Regime in the court of King George IV, who promoted political, social, and economic reform in his overseas colonies. Eventually, like much of its brethren colonies, Vandalia was granted its independence in 1952. Today, Vandalia is a major economic hub of the Midwest and a major agricultural producer and trade center, with many family farmers and enterprises operating within its growing economy.
