Venezuela is one of the four republics of New Granada, located in the western part of the country: it borders British Guiana to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the north, Colombia to the west and Brazil to the south. The republic was created as a Spanish colony, before joining up with New Granada when the latter gained independence.
The republic is mostly mountainous, with narrow coastal plains in the north and low hills and lowlands in the south, toward the Brazilian border. Venezuela also includes a few islands in the Caribbean Sea. Its territory is rich with natural resources, and its economy mainly revolves around their exploitation, with main sectors being oil extraction and mining.
