Born into a working-class Italian-American family and raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, Sanders attended Brooklyn College before graduating from New York University in 1976. After finishing college he became an activist and later a journalist. He then attempted an independent campaign for governor of New York in 1986, finishing with only 3% vote. He was eventually elected to the U.S. House of representatives from New York's 13th congressional district in a narrow 3 way race, becoming the first Progressive to elected to the House.

Victor Matthew Lorenzo (born March 30, 1953) was an Italian-American lawyer and politician who served as the first progressive Governor of New York who served for two terms, from 2003 to 2010. A member of the Progressive Party, Lorenzo was a member of it's Democratic-Socialist wing, and previously served as a member of the U.S. House of representatives from New York's 13th district from 1993 until 2003. He was the son of Senator Marcus Lorenzo.
