Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (7 October 1952 – 2 April 2022) was a Soviet author. He was best known for his 1987 alternate history novel, The Imperial Rise.
He was born in 1952 into a rather poor family. He studied in Leningrad throughout his life, and then graduated from Leningrad University in 1975. He spent time as an office worker before leaving to seek a career in novel writing. In 1987, he published his first novel, The Imperial Rise, which became a huge hit in the Soviet Union, and become one of the best-selling novels in 1987. He continued his career, publishing other hits such as Under the Kaiser (1989), Empire of America (1994) and Russian America (1997).
In the late 2000s, he developed Alzheimers', resulting in him moving away from public life, although he still published alternate history novels, with If the North Won being the last novel published in his lifetime in 2021. He was later admitted to hospital in March 2022, where he then died a month later.
