Alternative History

WWE Over the Limit was a 2009 professional wrestling event put on by World Wrestling Entertainment. It was the first ever Over the Limit event, the 10th event of 2009, and the 238th event overall in the alternate WWF timeline. Emanating from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the main event was a No Holds Barred World Heavyweight Title match between CM Punk and Edge. Other matches on the card included a WWE Title match between Triple H and Batista, a Gauntlet match for a shot at the WWE World Tag Team Titles and a match between former WWE Champion William Regal and a returning Undertaker.

Prelude[]

At Night of Champions, CM Punk had managed to stave off Edge's attempts to win the World Heavyweight Championship from him by way of introducing his new stable, the Straight Edge Society. The two members of the group, disciples named Luke "Doc" Gallows and M.G. Anderson, attacked the Rated R Superstar, which caused CM Punk to be intentionally disqualified, thus keeping his title. However Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long wouldn't stand for Punk to get out like that, ordering him to face Edge in a rematch with No Holds Barred.

Batista had defeated Randy Orton at Night of Champions in order to become the #1 contender to the WWE Championship, the same night that Triple H defeated William Regal inside Hell in a Cell in order to regain that championship. In the build to Over the Limit, Triple H had been receiving "encouragement" from his father-in-law, Vince McMahon, over the kind of person that Vince wanted as WWE Champion. He tried to stack the deck against The Animal, but Triple H refused his help, instead wanting to beat the former Evolution stablemate on his own.

The Big Show and The Miz had dominated the tag team division throughout much of the year, only losing the titles briefly in the summer before regaining them from The Commonwealth. The Miz had been the domineering of the two, utilizing the muscle of the Big Show to do his bidding. Claiming that they had defeated every team in the WWE, they decided to hold a "Show-Miz Invitational", a gauntlet match of several teams in the WWE, with the winner receiving a title shot.

Former WWE Champion William Regal had made it his goal to regain the title at any cost, not caring who he had to beat in order to get a WWE or World Title shot. Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long took him up on that offer, and said that he would order him to go one on one with a returning Undertaker to gain a title opportunity.

Aftermath[]

Batista would continue to feud with Triple H over the WWE Championship, even teaming with his "surrogate father" Vince in a Survivor Series match the following month against a returning D-Generation X. Based on the end of the match between CM Punk and Edge, the Straight Edge Messiah would enter into a feud with The Undertaker over the World Heavyweight Championship, culminating in a match between the two at Survivor Series.
