WWE Survivor Series was a 2009 professional wrestling event put on by World Wrestling Entertainment. It was the 23rd annual Survivor Series, the 11th event of 2009 and the 239th event overall in the alternate WWF timeline. Emanating from Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY, the main event was a World Heavyweight Title match between CM Punk and The Undertaker. Other matches on the card included a 5 on 5 Survivor Series match with teams captained by Triple H and Batista respectively, an Intercontinental Title match between Brian Kendrick and Cody Rhodes, and the return of Edge & Christian as a tag team against Gallows and Anderson of the Straight Edge Society.
Prelude[]
After defeating Edge in his No Holds Barred match for the World Title, Champion CM Punk prepared to shave Edge's head as a sign of "straight edge superiority." However, before he and his cronies could accomplish this goal, the lights in the arena went out. When they came back up, Edge's prone body had been replaced by that of the Undertaker. The Phenom proceeded to destroy the whole of the Straight Edge Society. This would lead Punk to challenge the Undertaker to a World Title match at Survivor Series. The Straight Edge Messiah also seemingly outsmarted the Deadman on one instance, luring him in by threatening the shave the head of an unsuspecting female fan, only for the fan to be an actual plant named Serena. In the ambush, Punk viciously attacked the Undertaker's hand with a ball-pin hammer, smashing it across the steel ring steps and leaving the Phenom wounded going into their title clash.
To the surprise of many, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon had turned on his own son in law at Over the Limit, costing him the WWE Championship in favor of The Animal Batista. He accused The Game of "waiting for him to die" and promised him he would never take over WWE, going so far as to "write Stephanie out of the will" He also touted Batista as "the perfect physical specimen" and as his chosen champion. Triple H demanded a rematch for the title, one that McMahon was not eager to give. Instead he booked a 5 on 5 Survivor Series match, with a team captained by the WWE Champion against one captained by The Game. Vince went even so far as to join Batista's team, stating that Triple H would get his title shot if he could pin him and Batista in the match. This would be made more difficult with a returning Chris Jericho added to Batista's team. Triple H responded by stacking his team with two former world champions in the returning Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton.
The Brian Kendrick had won the Intercontinental Title a few months prior to Survivor Series, and on an episode of Raw had made an enemy out of Cody Rhodes. The 2nd generation star was hosting a tribute to his father, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, which was interrupted by Kendrick and his muscle, Ezekiel Jackson. Cody challenged Kendrick to a non-title match right then and there, which ended in a dq when Jackson attacked both Cody and his father (who was at ringside). This led to Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long making a rematch for Survivor Series, this time for the title.
Edge's feud against the Straight Edge Society was still ongoing, despite CM Punk's pre-occupied nature with The Undertaker. After being assaulted by Luke "Doc" Gallows and M.G. Anderson for several weeks, Edge recruited a tag team partner to combat the two disciples. To the surprise and thrill of many, Edge managed to convince his former tag team partner and real life best friend Christian to be in his corner, reuniting the multiple-time tag team champions after several years to take on Gallows and Anderson.

Aftermath[]
Due to the fact that Triple H didn't explicitly pin either Batista or Mr. McMahon in the Survivor Series match, he wouldn't be granted the title shot he had been promised, instead forced to face Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels in a #1 contendership Triple Threat match. Instead Batista would face the man who did surprisingly pin him in the match, Kofi Kingston, with the title on the line. The Undertaker and CM Punk would continue to feud for much of the winter, despite Shawn Michaels requesting a rematch with the Deadman for Wrestlemania 26, setting up their storyline for that event.
