Alternative History

WWE Unforgiven was a 2006 professional wrestling event put on by World Wrestling Entertainment. It was the 8th Unforgiven event, the 9th event of 2006, and the 201st event overall in the alternate WWF timeline. It was also exclusive to the Raw brand of WWE. Emanating from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the main event was a Hell in a Cell Tag Team Match between D-Generation X & Vince and Shane McMahon. Other matches on the card included a WWE Title match between John Cena and Edge, an Intercontinental Title Match between Kane and Umaga, and the finals of the World Tag Team Title tournament, which saw Goldust teaming with a replacement partner against MNM. This replacement partner would turn out to be his father, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes.

Prelude[]

At Summerslam, D-Generation X had managed to one-up the Chairman Vince McMahon during the World Tag Team title match, defeating the duo of Sylvester Terkay and Elijah Burke despite McMahon being the Special Guest Referee (and being biased against them). However, their "striking of a WWE official" led to McMahon stripping them of the World Tag Team Titles the next night on Raw as well as forbidding them from being in the subsequent tournament to crown new champions. DX responded by painting their logo on the tail of Vince's private WWE jet. This so incensed the chairman, that he challenged his son-in-law and Michaels to a Hell in a Cell tag team match, with Vince teaming with his son Shane to take on the degenerates.

John Cena had overcome the Mind Games of Edge in order to defeat him and regain the WWE Title at Summerslam. However, the manner of his victory was controversial, as Cena had used a steel chain (introduced into the ring by Edge) behind the referee's back to win the title. Edge also wouldn't leave well enough alone, attacking Cena the following night on Raw and leaving him laying in a pool of his own blood. Interim Raw General Manager Johnathan Coachman made a match for Unforgiven between the two, adding a pair of stipulations to try and end the long running feud. He decreed that it would be Edge's final shot at the WWE Title, while also stating that if Cena was disqualified or counted out, he would lose the title.

Since his debut at the end of May, the Samoan Bulldozer Umaga had run roughshod over everyone on the Raw brand, racking up an impressive undefeated streak in the previous three months. This unblemished record was enough to earn him an Intercontinental Title shot against the Big Red Machine Kane. The two monsters squared off against each other on an episode of Raw, only for the match to end in a No Contest when they began brawling into the crowd, Umaga's handler Alejandro Estrada barely getting him out of harm's way in time. A rematch was set for Unforgiven with the title on the line.

After DX was stripped of the tag titles, a tournament was held to crown new champions, with the finals set to take place at the Pay Per View event. On one side were multi-time tag team champions MNM, while on the other hand was supposed to be the duo of Goldust and Shelton Benjamin. However Mercury and Nitro took out Benjamin on the go home episode of Raw, injuring him and forcing him out of the title match. This left Goldust scrambling to find a new partner. That partner would turn out to be his own father, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes.

Aftermath[]

The aftermatch assault by Edge and Randy Orton on D-Generation X would lead to a short lived tag team called Rated RKO, who would begin feuding the DX for the remainder of the year. They would also cut short the miracle tag title reign of the Rhodes boys on an episode of Raw. Trish Stratus' return would lead to a feud between her and Amazing Kong for the Divas Title. A planned storyline between Sylvester Terkay and Elijah Burke on a potential breakup of the tandem would be cut short by Terkay's injury suffered in a match against Chris Masters. Burke would continue as a singles star while Terkay would be released following the Royal Rumble in 2007.
