The City of Washington, formally the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), also known as Washington City, is the capital city of the United States. It is the sole city within the state of New Columbia. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River, which forms its southwestern and southern border with the Confederate state of Virginia, and it shares a land border with the U.S. state of Maryland on its remaining sides. The city was named for George Washington, a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, and the state is named after Columbia, a female personification of the nation.
