Weezer was an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992. The band is most famous for their self-titled album, Weezer (1994), especially the song "Say It Ain't So". Despite the widespread popularity of ''Say It Ain't So'', the album itself did not sell as well. This was believed to be due to conflicts between Rivers Cuomo and producer Ric Ocasek.
Today, the band has developed a cult-following, even as they are regarded as a "one-hit wonder". Rivers Cuomo would go on to find more widespread success with his band Wheatus in 2000.
History[]
Formulative Years and early work (1992 - 1995)[]
The idea behind Weezer would come when Rivers Cuomo would relocate from Connecticut to Los Angeles in the late 1980s to pursue a career with his high school metal band named Zoom. Zoom disbanded at somepoint in the early 1990s, but Cuomo would stay in Los Angeles. At some point while residing in the city, Cuomo met drummer Patrick WIlson and his friend Matt Sharp. They also met Brian Bell at around this time as well.
Cuomo, Wilson, Sharp and Bell formed Weezer on February 14, 1992. The band took their name from a nickname Cuomo's father gave them. They began writing several songs around this time, including "Say It Ain't So" and "The Sweater Song". The band would get a big break after they closed for the English rock band Oasis in late 1992. This would catch the attention of record producer and musician Ric Ocasek. Ocasek was impressed by the band's performance and offered them a record deal on the spot. The band accepted and work on their first official studio album, Weezer, had begun.
