The Federation of Austria (German: Föderation Österreich), or commonly called as West Austria (German: Westösterreich), is a federal republic and a landlocked country of roughly 5 million people in Central Europe. It is bordered by West Germany to the north, East Austria to the east, Illyria and Italy to the south, and Switzerland to the west. West Austria maintains close political and economic ties with West Germany even after Austria regained its independence back in 1945. Its administrative capital, Salzburg, is located exactly at the border between the West Austrian state of Salzburg and the West German state of Bavaria.
