West Florida (WF), also referred to as Mainland Florida, is a state located in the 'Deep South' sub-region of the Southern United States. Admitted to the Union as the 21st state on December 3, 1817, it shares borders with Louisiana to the west, Mississippi to the north, and Georgia and East Florida to the east. It is frequently referred to by locals as "the Gulf State".

What is modern day West Florida was originally established by the British in 1763, following the end of the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War), from the old Spanish colonial territory of La Florida. For roughly twenty years, the British governed East and West Florida, both of which remained loyal during the American Revolution, serving as refuges for Tories (American Loyalists) after the war, at which time both Floridas returned to nominal Spanish control as part of the 1783 Treaty of Paris (which also defined the permanent northern border of West Florida as 32° 30’ N). In 1810, settlers discontent with Spanish rule revolted and subsequently established the Republic of West Florida, with its first capital at St. Francisville in modern-day Feliciana County. After seven years as an independent nation, West Florida was annexed by the United States in 1817, at which time Pensacola became the state capital, while the first and only President of the Republic, Fulwar Skipwith, was appointed as the new state's first governor.
