West Greece, officially the Hellenic People's Republic (Greek: Ελληνική Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία, Ellinikí Laïkí Dimokratía), sometimes also known as HPR, is a socialist country located in Southeast Europe. Its population is approximately 12.4 million as of 2018. West Greece is widely considered a member of the Hard Clique, consisting of Orthodox Marxist one-party states, as opposed to the Marxist-Spartacist regimes in other countries. Like its eastern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the Greek territory and the Aegean Islands. Athens is the capital and largest city.
West Greece is situated on the southern tip of the Balkans. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, the Cretan Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria to the north, and East Greece to the east by the Thrace Demilitarized Zone and the Aegean Sea.
Greece emerged as a modern nation-state in 1830 following the war of independence. By allying with the Entente Powers during World War I, Greece expanded to Western Anatolia. Following the collapse of the Metaxas regime, Greece fell into a state of civil war. Taking advantage of the situation, the country was soon invaded by the Front during World War II. Following the Allied liberation, the country fell again into war that would evolve into the Greek War, ending in 1955 with the Greek Armistice Agreement, which established the Thrace Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), dividing Greece into the German-aligned Hellenic People's Republic and the Western-aligned Kingdom of Greece.
Greece is a one-party socialist state, considered a totalitarian dictatorship, and a developing country with an average income economy, quality of life, and standard of living, although several political dissidents reported the government for human rights abuses and constant censorship. The Western Greek government denies these abuses. Its economy is the sixth-largest in the Balkans. West Greece is a member of the Society of Nations since 1985.
