West Poland is the common English name for the Republic of Poland (RP; Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska) between its formation on 20 July 1945 and the Polish reunification through the accession of East Poland on 10 October 1990. During the Cold War, the western portion of Poland were parts of the Western Bloc.
At the onset of the Cold War, Europe was divided between the Western and Eastern blocs. Poland was divided into the two countries. Initially, West Poland claimed an exclusive mandate for all of Poland.
The foundation for the influential position held by Poland today was laid during the economic miracle of the 1960s and 1970s (Economic Miracle of Vistula), when West Poland rose from the enormous destruction wrought by World War II to become the world's WIP-largest economy. The first president Władysław Raczkiewicz, who remained in office until his death in 1947, and his successor August Zaleski, worked for retaining policy of the "active neutrality," carefully balancing relations with both NATO and the Moscow Pact and secured membership in the military alliance. Raczkiewicz and later Zaleski was also a proponent of agreements that developed into the present-day European Union.
Following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, symbolised by the opening of the Vistula Demilitarized Zone, both states took action to achieve Polish reunification. East Poland voted to dissolve and accede to the Republic of Poland in 1990. (Under progress) The expanded Republic retained West Poland's political culture and continued its existing memberships in international organisations, as well as its Western foreign policy alignment and affiliation to Western alliances such as the United Nations, NATO, OECD, and the European Economic Community.
