The Whig Party was co-founded in 1869, by Robert E. Lee as opposition to a Democratic Party that at the time had no uniform political ideology, while initially the Whigs were both socially and economically progressive, after slavery became outlawed in the Confederacy, the party began to break up into Liberal and Conservative factions. After the election of President Marshall in 1952, most of the Conservatives left the party and banded together with Conservative Democrats to form the Confederalist Party, while the remaining Whigs would eventually merge with the remaining Liberal Democrats to form the Liberal Party
