William Harris Crawford (February 24, 1772-March 9, 1825) was the 5th President of the United States and the 5th Vice President of the United States. While walking the perimeter of the White House, Crawford was shot in the back of the head on March 9, 1825 by an unknown assassin, and was presumed dead on the scene. Vice President Henry Clay is inaugurated as the 6th President of the United States on the day following the assassination.
