Willy Brandt (born Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm; 18 December 1913 – 8 October 1992) was a German statesman and politician, who was leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1964 to 1987 and served as Chancellor of Germany from 1981 to 1985. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for his efforts to strengthen cooperation in western Europe through the European Alliance and his attempts to achieve reconciliation between Germany and France. He was the first Social Democrat chancellor since 1930.
