Alternative History

A world's fair is a large international exhibition designed to demonstrate the cultures and achievements of the nations of the world. Held every two to three years, the World Fairs, along with the Olympics, are among the largest peaceful gatherings of people in the post-Doomsday world. The postwar World Fair was hosted 30 years later in 2013 by the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand. It brought millions from all across the changed world to Brisbane. Since then, many nations and states from across the globe have placed bids, even some very surprising ones. Before Doomsday, the Paris-based International Bureau of Exposition was the premier authority on these matters, and the nascent efforts for the revitalized organization have occurred in the Republic of the French Southern Territories.

History[]

Pre-Doomsday[]

See world's fair

Post-Doomsday[]

The 1984 New Orleans world's fair never occurred as a result of Doomsday: the city itself was obliterated and its ruins swallowed by the Gulf of Mexico. After Doomsday, the memory of the concept of the World's fair faded from public memory across most of the globe, but was not completely forgotten. The history of the World's fair was better retained in the Southern Hemisphere but there were some records of the world's fair to survive in the northern hemisphere, as well as mentions of it in various surviving literature, both fictional and non-fiction. After the International Olympics Committee was reborn in 2005, talks about restarting the International Bureau of Exposition started to be discussed. The new International Bureau of Exposition first met in 2011, following the conclusion of hostilities across much of the world.

Chronology of Expositions[]

The following is a chronology of the ensuing fairs, as well as the bids of various nations. A feature of the newer fairs was the concept of a "mascot", typically an anthropomorphic animal or a cultural figure, so as to exude a theme of welcoming the youth of the post-Doomsday world who may have been confused by the concept.

2013: Brisbane[]

Bidding Process[]

There were 5 bids for the inaugural World Fair: It was an unspoken expectation that only cities from untouched nations would be included in the bid for the first World Fair.

The bids were as follows:

  5. Brisbane, ANZC - The winning bid was Brisbane, ANZC. The theme was 30 years of progress after doomsday. It mascot was a blue kangaroo in a marching band uniform called Eddie. Several of world pavilions remained after the fair and were turned into an "Epcot"-style attraction called the Global Fair Ground. Before Doomsday, Brisbane was the frontrunner for the 1988 World's Fair, a fact which was curiously noted by the voting committee.
