World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 until 1946.
The Allies launched Operation Downfall, the invasion of the Japanese home islands in November 1944 with landings in Kyushu. In April 1945 further troops landed on the Kanto plain, ultimately leading to the Unconditional Surrender of Japan on 11th July 1945.
The Soviet Union launched Operation Stalin in March 1945
